TOWER MAINTENANCE
It has been well determined that a small sum of money spent yearly on any type of tower for maintenance, will keep it in very good condition. At one location subjected to above average salt-laden wind, a four year old 140' tower is in perfect condition. Yearly maintenance cost has averaged $150.00. Costs at other locations will vary due to local labor prices. Here* 1 2 s what has been done once a year on the above 140 footer.
1. Wire brush and paint the tower.
2. Take down and clean guy wires and coat with fresh Texaco H grease. 3• Tar guy anchors.
4. Grease turnbuckles.
5. Treat guy saddles.
Congratulations to Don Jones, Kingston, on condition of this tower.
To duplicate this at your station, request the station manager to ask for an AMO to provide the funds.
A tower at one station, which never received any maintenance, is costing $2,500 to repair; new bolts, guys, guy anchors, etc.
WINCHARGER TOWERS - GUY TENSION DEVICES
There are several 140* Y/incharger aerophare tower installations in the Division that do not have guy tension devices included in the guy wire assembly. The plans at present are to install them whenever the guys are taken down for servicing.
Please keep this in mind and request a set when you are servicing your guy wires. See Dwg. GEN-1A-33-4.
The guy tension device is valuable when adjusting tower guy wires to proper tension. One device is used for each guy level and a typical installation would find one device for the top guys fastened at a chosen guy anchor. The second guy level would then have the device connected to a different guy anchor, etc. This will avoid the congestion that occurs if all devices are connected at the same anchor.
At the stations where guy tension devices have been installed, be sure to keep them well greased to avoid corrosion.
The above will also apply to 80' Wincharger towers.
