AEROPHARE AUTOMATIC KEYERS
Examination of several AK Units by the shop indicates that the gear train can be damaged by improper handling. One of the most common causes of gear trouble is the tightening of the identification cam wheel on the shaft. This should never be done with a wrench. When placing a cam wheel on the shaft, or in just tightening the wheel, the holding nut should be tightened by hand only. Even when doing it by hand, care should be exercised not to strain the gears. Grasp the cam with one hand, keeping it as motionless as possible, and tighten the nut with the other hand. The nut does not have to be excessively tight, just hand snug is sufficient. Considerable leverage is possible by twisting this shaft, even by hand, so that gear wheel set screws in the gear box can be shifted out of position causing gears to become misaligned and starting heavy wear.
A new Maintenance Manual write-up on Automatic Keyers will be furnished shortly.
