GROUND RADIO BULLETIN NO. 16 - October 31. 1949 COMMS. DEPT. L.A.D,
RATS, MICE. AND SNAKES
While Dwg. GEN-21A-974 (sheet 2) in the manual mentions preventive measures against entry of rats, mice, etc,, into the equipment by way of floor trenches, this still seems to occur in some stations.
It is relatively simple to avoid this, and a thorough examination of all floor trenches will disclose the steps necessary to prevent animal entry.
Since transmitter cabinets are completely closed except through the bottom, the only entry can be from floor trenches* Floor boards should be completely removed and the trench area carefully checked. This will disclose holes in the trench, or conduits feeding cable into the trench, which supplies entry means for rats and mice* The trench should be well cleaned and all such holes covered or plugged until every means of entry has been eliminated. Conduits can be closed with wire mesh or any other non-inflammable material that will effectively close off the opening.
In replacing the trench floor boards, make sure that the boards fit well and the trenches are completely covered, particularly around the base of control racks, etc.
Rats and mice can cause expensive damage to equipment and in addition can result in equipment becoming inoperative vrhen most needed.
The same procedure applies to receiving equipment installations. Also such entry should be combatted in the building itself as well as floor trenches and equipment.
