SPEAKING OF PEOPLE l-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Volume 12, No. 8 January 3, 1972 GROUND BREAKING CEREMONIES President Stanford is inviting FOR RATHSKELLER SET FRIDAY all members of the University family to attend ground-breaking ceremonies for the UM Rathskeller at 12:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, in the parking lot to the west of the Whitten Memorial Student Union. Speakers will include President Stanford, Tom Rebel, graduate student who is chairman of the rathskeller advisory board; and a representative from the Coral Gables City Commission. Honored guest will be Mrs. Margaret Gautier, widow of UM trustee Charles H. Gautier, who had served as chairman of the student affairs sub-committee of the UM Board of Trustees, and trustee member of the Rathskeller board of directors. DR, TEBEAU TO WRITE Dr. Charlton W. Tebeau, distinguished UNIVERSITY'S HISTORY author-historian and University of Miami professor of history for 32 years, has been chosen by UM President Henry King Stanford to write the history of the University's first 50 years for publication during its Golden Anniversary year 1975-76. Dr. Stanford's decision was announced following approval by the executive committee of the Board of Trustees. Author of five books on Florida, Dr. Tebeau's most recent, "A History of Florida," published this year by the University of Miami Press, has received nation-wide acclaim for its lively narrative as well as its scholarly accuracy. He is editor of The Carrell, publication of the University Friends of the Library and since 1946 has edited Te-questa, journal of the Historical Association of Southern Florida. Dr. Tebeau joined the UM in 1939 and for 24 years was chairman of the history department. He stepped down from the chairmanship in 1969 and from teaching last June. DR. SAWYER RESIGNS; Dr. Donald A. Sawyer, acting dean of DR. CATZ ACTING DEAN the UM School of Engineering, has resigned his post, effective January 31, to accept a position with the firm of Fielland and Colvin, consulting engineers in Tampa. Dr. Jerome Catz, professor of mechanical engineering, was named acting dean. A consultive committee is undertaking a search for a dean, in cooperation with President Stanford and Dr. Armin H. Gropp, vice president for academic affairs. UM LAW STUDENTS WIN University of Miami law students have NATIONAL COMPETITION won the 1971 National Moot Court Championship in competition with 125 other law schools from all parts of the country. The UM defeated Georgetown University in the final round in New York City Dec. 17 after winning over the teams from University of Wisconsin, University of Virginia and George Washington University. The team, coached by Professor M. Minnette Massey, is composed of Daniel S. Schwartz, Paul J. Levine and Roger Schwartz. President Stanford, representing the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, spoke on "Challenges and Opportunities" at Governor Askew's Conference on Post-High School Education in Florida at the University of South Florida, Tampa, Dec. 6... Professor Carl E. B. McKenrv. director, Center for Urban Studies, has been elected Executive Vice President of the Greater Miami Coalition by its board of directors. He succeeds William Wynn, who is joining the staff of United Ways of America. Prof. McKenry, who is also professor of law and management at the UM, is taking a leave of absence from the University to serve as the Coalition's senior full time staff executive. McKenry was guest of honor of the Florida South Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at its Dec. 7 meeting and presented with an A.I.A. plaque as a symbol of recognition for "great contribution to our chapter and to the betterment of our community".. Dr. Michael J. Stolee. associate dean, School of Education, has been chosen by the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association and the Board of Regents of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., to receive a Distinguished Alumnus Award at the college's commencement activities, May 27-28... Paul Galindo, a leading actor in Cuba for more than two decades under the stage name of Paul Diaz, has been named interim manager of the University of Miami's Kou-bek Memorial Center, S.W. 27th Avenue and 3rd Street. Galindo has taught drama in the Center's Cuban Culture Program in the Division of Continuing Education...
