SPEAKING OF PEOPLE January 20,1964 Voi.4, No.9 YALE SCHOLAR SPEAKER Dr. Henri Peyre, Sterling Professor of FOR 480 GRADUATES French and chairman of Yale Univer- sity’ s department of romance languages, will be commencement speaker at ceremonies for approximately 480 students who will receive degrees Jan. 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Dade County Auditorium. Approximately 15 doctoral, mo re than 40 Master’s and a score of law degrees will be among those presented. A noted authority on European literature, Dr. Peyre is the author of 14 books and numerous articles and is one of 24 American and European scholars currently editing the Boswell Papers at Yale. In 1935 he was awarded the rank of Officer in the French Legion of Honor for his scholarly efforts. He is a former president of both the Modern Language Association and the American Association of Teachers of French. 2.000 TO ATTEND MATH MEETINGS More than 2,000 mathematicians from throughout the world will gather here, Jan. 23-27 for annual meetings of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. The AMS holds its sessions Jan. 23-26, principally in University College and at the Everglades Hotel. The MAA meets Jan. 25-27 at UC and in the Ponce deLeon Junior High Auditorium. President Henry King Stanford will host a reception and tea for the visiting mathematicians of both societies at 4:30 p.m., Jan. 24 in the Brockway Lecture Hall of the Otto G. Richter Library. Dr. J. H. Curtiss is chairman of local arrangements for both meetings. Dr. Herman Meyer is MAA program chairman. OLDING NAMED PR DIRECTOR Ray C. Olding, former assistant director of public information and public relations at Vanderbilt University, has joined UM as Director of Public Relations. In announcing the appointment, Vice President Stophlet described responsibilities of the new office as encompassing overall public relations and general supervision of the Office of Public Information. Mr. Olding has served as director of public information and relations for The American Institute of Foreign Trade at Phoenix, Ariz. and was nine years a member of the Spanish faculty at the University of South Dakota. He holds his B.A. from USD, his M.A. from the U. of California and has done graduate work at Chicago and Middlebury College. Vadakin... Roy J. Johnston, director, communications services, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters... Dr. Samuel F. Harby. education, was featured in the recent Channel 7 program “An Epidemic of Friendship” in his capacity as president of the Miami Council for International Visitors... Attending the 14th annual Conference on the Caribbean at the University of Florida were: Drs. lone S. Wright and Robert C. Beyer. history, Dr. Ralph S. Boggs, modern languages, and Harry Stark, economics... Dr. Duane Koenig, history, was appointed to a constitutional revision committee at the Philadelphia meeting of the American Catholic Historial Association, meeting in conjunction with the American Historical Association.
