UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Office of Public Information April 18, 1966 COMMUNICATIONS ARTS OPENS ON WEDNESDAY Vol. 6, No. 14 More than 150 photographers, editors, art directors and writers from this country and abroad will be here this week (April 20-22) for the Tenth Anniversary Miami Conference on Communications Arts. Climax of the meeting will be the Awards Dinner on Friday evening, at which Jules Bergman, science reporter for the American Broadcasting Company, will be the featured speaker. This year's conference will include an International Morning (April 22) at which delegates will hear reports from Alexei S. Belokon, editor, Washington editorial board, Soviet Life magazine; Boris N. Sedov, executive editor of that publication; John Jacobs, editor, Amerika Illustrated, and Laila Iversen of Manite International Center for Photography in London. The opening evening of the conference has been set aside for a program on holography — three dimensional photography without the use of a lens — which recently was reported in Time Magazine. Manuel Komroff of New York, noted author, lecturer and philosopher of photography, will make the keynote address Wednesday morning. Other speakers, representing every phase of communications arts, include Arthur Rothstein, Look Magazine; Harold G. Buell, director of photography, Associated Press; Dr. O. B. Copeland, editor of Southern Living magazine; Ken Heyman, photographer; John R. Whiting, author and executive vice president of Popular Science Monthly; Clay Felker, editor of the New York Herald-Tribune Sunday Magazine; Louis R. Glessmann, art director of Holiday Magazine; Richard Wolters, art director, Business Week magazine; Peter Curtis Bunnell, Stieglitz archivist in the Yale University department of history; Beaumont New-hall, director of George Eastman House, Rochester, N.Y.; Dr. J. Riis Owre, UM associate dean of the faculties, and Eliot Elisofon, Life staff photographer. Co-directors of the meeting are Wilson Hicks, director of university publications, and Morris Gordon, director of photography, Western Electric Co., New York. SACS VISITATION MAY 1 - 4 The 16-member Visitation Team of the ___________ Southern Association of Colleges and Schools will be on campus May 1-4 as representatives of the Commission on Colleges and Schools for the SACS. While on campus, team members will evaluate the completeness and thoroughness of the University's Self-Study and the way in which the University is meeting the standards of the Association. This is necessary for continuing University accreditation by the Association. Chairman of the Visitation Team will be Dr. Herman E. Spivey, vice president for academic affairs of The University of Tennessee. Chairman of the Self-Study Steering Committee is Dr. J. Riis Owre, associate dean of the faculties. The Self-Study was begun in the Spring of 1964. Since that time more than 200 faculty members have served on its various committees.
