THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff February 5, 1968 Volume 8, No. 10 NEW MEMBERS NAMED TO Four additional trustees authorized BOARD OF TRUSTEES by the Board of Trustees last No- vember were announced by President Stanford following the annual election meeting of the board on campus January 26. They are James S. Billings, realtor and immediate past president of the UM Citizens Board; Robert Z. Greene, financier and philanthropist; Melville Bell Grosvenor, editor of the National Geographic Society Magazine, and Floyd D. Hall, chairman of the board of Eastern Air Lines. Joining the Board as regular trustee after three years as alumni trustee is W. Sloan McCrea. He fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Alfred H. Daniels. Reelected for additional five-year terms were Robert M. Morgan and John R. Ring. In other action, the Board reelected Oscar E. Dooly as chairman and Harry Hood Bassett as vice chairman. All officers of the University were also reelected. There are now 38 regular trustees, 9 trustees emeriti and six alumni trustees, each of whom serves for three years, with two members being replaced each year. New alumni trustees will be elected at the February meeting. MARTERIE COLLECTION The valuable Ralph Marterie col- DONATED TO THE UM lection of his orchestra music ar- rangements over the past 15 years has been presented to the UM School of Music by the famed composer, conductor and trumpeter. The collection consists of well over 500 arrangements of recorded music, complete with scores and parts. Marterie* s daughter, Judy Marterie Crowden, and her husband, William, owners of Drums Unlimited, a percussion specialty shop in Chicago, made the presentation of the collection on campus. They said the manuscripts were valued in excess of $200,000. The gift resulted from a December meeting in Chicago between Marterie and Dean Lee who told the popular orchestra leader of the University* s program in studio music and jazz and the need for professional arrangements. Said Marterie: “I*m delighted to give my collection to a school where it will be appreciated and played.** DR. CLARENCE STUCKWISCH Dr. Clarence G. Stuckwisch, 51, NEW CHEMISTRY CHAIRMAN professor and executive officer of the Buffalo chemistry department, State University of New York, became chairman of the UM chemistry iepartment Feb. 1, succeeding Dr. WarrenH.Steinbach, chairman since 1946. Dr. Steinbach had expressed the wish to return to active teaching and research, said Dean Louis L. McQuitty, College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Stuckwisch was professor and department chairman and director of the Institute of Scientific Research at New Mexico Highlands University before going to Buffalo. Wilson G. Stapleton, dean emeritus of the Cleveland-Marshall Law School, Cleveland, Ohio, has joined the UM School of Law as visiting professor, is teaching “Real Property Practice Workshop**... Dr. Frederick Fennell, music, was clinician and guest conductor, Norman-Oklahoma City Band Clinics, Jan. 29-30, conductor at the Baldwin-Wallace College Clinic, Ohio, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, and clinician at the Nels Vogel Clinic, Moorhead, Minn. Feb. 2-4... Harlan W. Johnson, aerospace studies, has been promoted from Major to Lt. Colonel... Dr. Grover A. J. Noetzel, economics, gave his 23rd annual talk before the Economic Society -of South Florida Jan. 24 at the Dupont Plaza Hotel. His topic: “Consequences of Imbalance in a Mature Boom.**... Dr. Billy J. Paschal, education, spoke on “How Florida Can Move Ahead** at the Broward County Legislative Workshop on Education at Stranahan High School, Jan.23... W. A. D. Anderson. M.D.. chairman, pathology, attended the recent American Cancer Society meetings in New York. He is a member of directors, chairman of fellowship committee, vice-chairman, cytology committee, and member of medical, scientific and executive committees.
