SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Vol. 9, No. 4 November 4, 1968 UNITED FUND DRIVE The 1968 United Fund campaign on the REACHES $10,494 University of Miami campus had reached a figure of $10,494, as of October 29, when Veritas went to press. Target for the UM family is $50,000. Here's the breakdown of pledges by divisions: Division Pledged Development $2,329 President's Office (including Athletics) $1,332 Financial Affairs $1,194 Student Affairs $ 731 Academic $4,908 Medical unreported % Achieved 148 per cent 132 per cent 12.5 per cent 19.8 per cent 16.9 per cent Charles Capps, assistant secretary-treasurer at the UM and director of the United Fund campaign on campus, said: “As you can see by the figures, we have a long way to go by this Friday. “This is our United Fund. Please help support it now.'' BROWARD ART EXHIBIT A million dollar Broward art exhibit SET FOR NOV. 11-12 will be held by the UM at the Sheraton Hotel-Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Nov. 11 and Tuesday, Nov. 12, with the showing of 31 paintings from the permanent collection of the University's Lowe Art Museum. The exhibition will be open to the public without charge from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. on both days. This art exhibition marks the first in a series of cultural events open to the public planned by the University in Fort Lauderdale during the current academic year. It has been carefully selected by the Museum staff to show the quality and variety of collections owned by the University. Among the painters represented in the exhibit are Gauguin, Monet, Constable, Philippe de Champaigne, del Sarto, Feti, Gainsborough, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec, Lurcat, Nolde, Peale, Raeburn, Rous-au, Sargent, Signac, Sully, Tintoretto, Van Goyen, Vlaminck, Greene, -.respi, Cornelissen, Bonheur, Blanch and Albright. An invitation-only preview will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 with guests being welcomed by President Stanford, Dr. August L. Freundlich, director of the Lowe Art Museum and chairman of the art department, Mrs. Charles Sabourin, coordinator of the exhibit, and by Dr. Floyd Osterman, chairman of the UM Broward Citizens Board. President Stanford has been elected a member of the board of directors of the Southern Bell Telephone Company. His election was announced in Atlanta by Frank M. Malone, Southern Bell president... Dr. Mark Murfin. chairman, elementary education, spoke on “Qualities of the Outstanding Teachers of Reading'' before the Florida Reading Association at Miami Beach Oct. 19... Dr, F. G. Walton Smith, director, IMS, presented testimony Oct. 31 at a meeting of the Sub-Committee on Oceanography at the Tropical Atlantic Biological Laboratory... Dr.Daniel R.Wells and Dr.Joseph Norwood, Jr., physics, attended an international meeting on Plasma Instabilities in Astrophysics in Pacific Grove, Calif. Oct. 14-17. Dr. Wells also addressed a colloquium on “A Variational Approach to the Dynamic Stability of High Density Plasmas in Magnetic Containment Devices" at the U. of Wisconsin... Dr. W.Ivan Hoy, chairman, religion, recently returned from a meeting of National Service Sections of the Reserve Officers Association in Louisville, Ky. A member of the National Naval Affairs Committee, Dr. Hoy is currently serving as national chaplain of the organization for a third term—unprecedented for a Naval Reserve chaplain... Dr. Sidney W. Fox, director, Institute of Molecular Evolution, delivers an invited lecture on “Self-Ordered Polymers and Self-Assembled Micro-systems" at Rockefeller U. today. On Nov.1-2 he attended meeting at NASA headquarters, of scientists who will plan instrumented tests for a soft landing on Mars to identify life related substances by remote control...
