March 2,1964 SU DEMOLITION STARTS TODAY Vol.4, No.12 Demolition of portions of UM’s existing Student Union begins today, preparatory to construction of the long-awaited replacement. The entire site, as well as the footbridge over the Student Lake will be blocked off, according to William McLaughlin, coordinator of new construction All are requested not to cut through the existing Union after parking their cars in the rear of the building. Groundbreaking ceremonies on the new Student Union were held Feb. 28. Completion of the structure is anticipated for Jan0, 1965. USG SCHEDULES RUSSELL KIRK Dr. Russell Kirk, author of a number of books and articles on the American conservative philosophy, will discuss "The Anatomy of Collectivism” as part of the Undergraduate Student Government Lecture Series at 4 p.m., March 4 in the Great Lounge of Mahoney Hall. Admission is free to faculty and students, and open to all others by donation. Dr. Kirk’s books include "The Conservative Mind” and "Academic Freedom.” He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Harper’s and other magazines. US-JAPANESE Cooperative research into the nature of hur- CONFERENCE SET ricanes and typhoons will be discussed by meteorologists from throughout the U.S. and Japan, meeting in Miami, March 16-20. Co-sponsored by the U.S, Weather Bureau and UM, the conference is part of the Japan-U.S, Science Cooperation Program begun recently in several disciplines, Conference sessions will be held at the Weather Bureau Office with visits to several UM facilities. In all some 20 to 25 scientists from both nations will participate. NASA GRANTS A grant of $70,800 has been awarded to UM FELLOWSHIPS by the National Aeronautics and Space Ad- ministration to supply four three-year graduate fellowships in space-related sciences and technology. The fellowships are in the amount of $2,400 for 12 months tenure plus dependents’ allowance and waiver of tuition. Students’ research should be related to some aspect of space science in order to be eligible. Deadline for applications is March 15.
