FACULTY SALARIES Faculty salaries at the University of Miami have reached an all-time AT ALL-TIME HIGH high, according to Oscar E. Dooly, chairman of the executive committee of the Board of Trustees. Reporting on salaries paid the 492 fulltime members of the faculty, Dooly stated the following figures as average monthly gross for a nine-month period: full professors, $1,175.92 per month or $10,583.28 per year; associate professors, $908.01 per month, $8,172.09 per year; assistant professors, $764.96 per month, $6,884.64 per year; instructors, $538.53 per month, $4,846.77 per year. Mr. Dooly pointed out that many faculty members receive an additional average in excess of $600 for summer sessions teaching. Maximum salaries paid professors on a nine-month basis were reported as follows: full professors, $19,387; associate professors, $12,375; assistant professors, $10,450; instructors, $7,000. Of the 492 full time faculty members, 168 are full professors; 112, associate professors; 139, assistant professors; 75, instructors. In announcing the salary figures, Mr. Dooly said: "I am happy to report this evidence of progress in the University. I believe the University of Miami is well on the way to achieving a salary scale commensurate with the competence and loyalty demonstrated by its staff. It is the desire of the Board to continue to improve faculty salaries over the years ahead.fr MATH DEPT ADDS NSF The mathematics department has been named one of 10 in the COLLEGE TEACHER PROGRAM country to offer the National Science Foundation Summer Conference for College Teachers of Mathematics as part of NSF's 25 summer conferences for college teachers of science, mathematics and engineering. Opening July 30, the 26-day conference will offer work in linear algebra and numerical analysis designed to strengthen mastery of the newer developments in mathematics. Dr. Emmet F. Low., Jr. will supervise the program and instruct the algebraic studies. Dr. Bernard E. Howard, director of UM's scientific computing center, will conduct the numerical analysis aspects of the program, utilizing UMTs IBM 1620 electronic computer system. Under terms of the $14,800 grant, 20 college teachers will receive tuition, travel and living expenses. DEBATERS QUALIFY FOR UM's Varsity Debaters won a first division berth in the annual WEST POINT TOURNAMENT Southeastern Regional Eliminations at Emory University, qualifying for the National Championship Tournament at West Point, April 25-28. Sophomores Neal Sonnett and Barry Richard placed first and third respectively in point totals, with Sonnett taking top speaker honors. UM's forensic teams have long been among the best in the country, twice have held the coveted National Championship Trophy. Coached since 1946 by Prof. Don Sprague, human relations, the debaters have compiled 1731 wins to 295 losses, conquering a host of top opponents in the process. Among the vanquished: Harvard, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Army, Navy, Air Force, Pitt, Penn, Chicago, Notre Dame, Purdue, Northwestern, Stanford, UCLA and all the leading southern schools. In the 16-year period, the Sprague teams have appeared in more than 100 exhibition matches against such opponents as Oxford, Cambridge, London, Calcutta, Havana, Toronto, Edinburgh and McGill. SPEAKING OF PEOPLE Dr. Faye Grant, home ec, has taken a leave of absence to work with the Foods and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome, Italy...Dr. J. H. Curtiss, mathematics, has been appointed associate editor of the American Mathematical Monthly and editor for analysis of the Journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics...Dr. J. J. Carney, asst, dean of faculties and Dr. W. G. Heuson, finance, will participate in the Central Banking Seminar sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank, At lanta^^Dr. Thorne Shipley, ophthalmology, will direct research entitled "Separate Additivity Role of Hue and Luminosity in Critical Fusion Phenomena" under a National Science Foundation 2-yr. grant of $24,600...Martin 0. Bayitch, law, was guest commentator at the regional meeting of the American Society of International Law at the University of Florida, recently addressed the Miami Rotary Club on "Migration of Law."...Phillip R. Campbell, asst, dean of men, will leave July 31 to become dean of students at Florida Southern...Clarence W. Smith, associate registrar, will leave April 1 to become director of admissions at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute... Douglas Matthewson, admissions counselor, also leaves April 1 for a position with the Coral Gables office of Esso Standard Oil, S.A., Ltd.
