- DANCE RHYTHMS: Members of the Federation of Cuban Students dance during Homecoming's parade • WW #■* .dim Hurricane www.hurricane . m i a m i. e d u / Volume 74, Number 23 University of Miami UWtVgnSITT Dr MIAMI Tuesday, November 19, 1996 Week ends in celebration and disappointment By TIANI IONES Staff Writer The University of Miami held its annual Homecoming celebration last weekend despite bad weather and low participation. Festivities included the annual parade along Ponce de Leon and Stanford Drive. The parade was followed by a pep rally at the University Center Patio. However, the traditional boat burning and fireworks display was canceled due to extremely gusty winds. Saturday activities included the football team's loss to Virginia Tech University, followed by the annual Homecoming Dance at the Hotel Intercontinental. The weather played a major factor in last weekend's activities and kept many students and alumni indoors. Yet, there were a few who did brave the rain and wind. Junior Courtney Watkins, a resident assistant in Pearson was one of the few students who took part in some of the Homecoming activities. "I'm not in anything this year, but I'm here supporting Pearson and Zeta Tau Alpha and I think things are going really well this year considering we have such poor weather." said Watkins. Canes lose Homecoming game By IONATHAN SANTUCCI Sports Writer Coming into the 1996 season the Orange Bowl has been a place of domination for the University of Miami football team. Since 1985 the Canes had only lost two games - a span that included an NCAA record 58 straight wins at home. 1996 has been different for UM and Saturday was no exception. Miami lost their third straight game at the OB as they fell to Virginia Tech 21-7. It was the first Big East loss of the season for the Canes and although the score doesn't indicate it - Miami played well and fell just short - eight yards short. “Virginia Tech is a very good and well coached team. We learned that last season in Blacksburg,” said head coach Butch Davis. “From a competitive standpoint this may be the best effort we've had in my two years here.” Virginia Tech (81, 5-1) struck early in the first quarter and never trailed in the game. After a Miami punt Hokie quarterback Jim Druckenmiller led the offense down the field with passes of 15 and 34 yards, driving to the Miami one yard line. Eaton RC enters not guilty plea By KELLY RUANE News Editor Eric Hollingsworth, the residence coordinator at Eaton Residential College who was placed on paid suspension after being arrested for misdemeanor child abuse, pleaded not guilty to those charges on Nov. 13, a representative from the Dade State Attorney’s office said. Mitch Fry, Coral Gables Police * spokesman, confirmed Hollingsworth was arrested for misdemeanor child abuse. "It was misdemeanor because he was released," Fry said. "The child [allegedly] had belt marks on his skin." The State Attorney's Office said Hollingsworth was charged with child neglect. Both, Dean of Students William Sandler and Eaton Resident Master Paul Lazarus, said Hollingsworth's future at the University is now being handled by the Office of the General Counsel. Robert Blake, UM general counsel. did not return several phone calls before press deadline. "It's long since passed from our hands," Lazarus said. Lazarus said John Baldessari, Apartment Area RC, is acting RC at Eaton. "|Baldessari| comes over and does discipline matters," Lazarus said. Because Baldessari is already employed as full-time Apartment Area RC, the Residence Halls Office has also hired Kirk White, a summa cum laude graduate of UM and former resident assistant at Pearson Residential College, as assistant Eaton RC. "The new position was created of assistant RC who is in the employ of RHO, who will interact with the RAs as superior and will live in the apartment and work with faculty," Lazarus said. Lazarus said White is "terrific" and is "working out wonderfully." « REDESIGN THE IBIS CONTEST WINNER José Zapata is the winner of the Redesign the Ibis contest held by The Miami Hurricane. Sigma Chi incident under investigation By KELLY RUANE News Editor While Sigma Chi fraternity celebrated Homecoming, fraternity brothers Michael Schoeppner and Lucas Folse were being released on bond Wednesday following sexual battery charges. Schoeppner and Folse were arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping two female students at the fraternity house, 6100 San Amaro Dr., at a party Nov. 2. The victims allege they were helpless because they were under the influence of alcohol and roofies. While the incident is being investigated, Sigma Chi is suspended from party privileges. House residents are also prohibited from having female guests in their living quarters. Folse and Schoeppner have not been suspended from school pending the investigation. "These students have not been convicted of anything, so they can still go to cluss," said Dean of Students William Sandler. Curtis Carlson, attorney for Sigma Chi, said he is conducting his own investigation into the events. Carlson said Sigma Chi is taking this investigation seriously. "The position of the fraternity is that any behavior that is abusive to any person is prohibited," Carlson said. "Our position is that we're going to investigate this and take swift, appropriate action." Carlson said Sigma Chi followed all University fraternity party regulations. They obtained permits beforehand, hired an off-duty police officer and checked identifications of those who attended the party. Those wearing wristbands were the only persons served alcohol. Nonalcoholic drinks were served at the party and were not "spiked," Carlson said.
