However, there is one solution that every University «lent should make and adhere that of being a more worthy ident of this University. We referred to this attitude last k in our editorial and feel it to so important as to warrant pitition. We should all try to boosters and not knockers. It ns not take a great amount of ill power to follow such a course it does for most resolutions. If the students were to say only id of the University, soon only id would be known of it. The teams are now being chosen, and the Council is anxious to have a large number of (andidates try out for the positions. The Debating Council has chosen the following officers for this year: Reba Engler, president; Louis Jepeway, vice president; Dr. Kenneth Close,*faculty advisor. - The University of Miami debating teams have been in the field for the past two years. During that time they have met teams, from the University of Florida twice and have won unanimous decisions .over them both times. Speaking of this year’s plans and prospects, Reba Engler, president of the Debating Council, says: “This is the only opportunity offered on the campus for real intercollegiate work of this nature. To be a member of the University debating team is an outstanding honor recognized by the entire student body and the faculty. The unexpected invitations from the University of Pittsburgh and North Carolina, whose teams have met the finest American and European groups, makes it the duty of every University of Miami student to offer his best support towards helping our team to be even better than the average.” The Debating Council is in search of new material. Inexperi-ened as well as experienced students are asked to try out. The twelve outstanding candidates will be selected; six for the first team and six for the second team. Tryouts will be held in the University auditorium on this Saturday at 3 p. m. The Phi Beta Kappa national subject has been chosen— “Resolved: that the nations should adopt the policy of complete disarmament except for such forces as may be needed for police purposes.” All who intend to try out are requested to notify the Council by leaving a message in the University mail box adressed to the Debating Council, stating name. Soph Hop Is Outstanding Success of First Semester One of the most outstanding and successful social events of the season was the Sophomore Hop, given at the Miami Women’s Culb on Friday, December 13th. Jean Shaffer and James Abras won the collegiate dance contest, which was the feature of the evening. They were awarded a pass to the Miami Beach Country Club by Porter Norris. Judges for the contest were. Dr. B. F. Ashe, Dr. and Mrs. John D. Shea, Miss Pat Arnold, Ronald Willey and Franklin Parson. Lambda Phi sorority won the silver cup offered by the Sophomore Class to the sorority selling the most tickets. Lambda Phi sold forty-four tickets. The committee in charge of the dance were: Rhendal Butler, chairman; Beatrice Smith, Paul Haber-ly, John Evans, and Stephen Ger-rard. • • • Upsilon Lambda Phi’s Give Bridge-Luncheon for Pledges The active and alumni members of the Upsilon Lambda Phi sorority entertained with a bridge-lunch-eon for their peldges on Thursday afternoon. Sorority colors, purple and white, were used to decorate the Orchid Room in Parkview Inn, where the affair was held. Novelties and favors were given to the guests. The pledges of the Upsilon Lamba Phi are: Mrs. Aaron Farr, Miss Melvina Weiss, Miss Ethel Goldberg, and Miss Bluma Crokin. Those present were: Miss Faye Weintraub, Mrs. Marcella Kanner, Mrs. Ruth Oravitz, Mrs. Martha Meyers, Mrs. Rose Shayne, Mrs. Rose Rifas, .Mrs. Frieda Lutsky, Mrs. Kaplan, Mrs. Fever, Miss Bluma Crockin, Miss Ethel Goldberg, and Mrs. Louella Farr. Jack Thompson Recovers From Serious Illness Jack Thompson, Secretary of Student Publications and former editor of the University News is slowly recovering after a series of operations in the Jackson Memorial Hospital. Late reports yesterday indicated that he would soon be restored to health and that visitors would be received at the hospital from now on. regular class meeting scheduled for January 9, when a representative of the Balfour Company of Attleboro, Mass., which has furnished the class rings for the last four years, will be present .together with the Elliott Company’s man, to show their samples.
