The Miami Hurricane( _ ___: iS* Vol. XXXII University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., April 12, 1957 No. 21 AC SWEEPS ELECTION^ HOWE WINS BY 580 VOTES HANDS HOPEFULLY and fervently clasped, the top four candidates of All Campus Party await the outcome of the SBG elections. Ralph Fisch, lower left, Leroy Howe, head bowed, Ann Spaulding and Dick Chapman, standing, reflect the compelling PSoTo by Ghivm mood of the pre-announcement nominees as they unite in their desire for victory. Of the four, Ralph Fisch was the only one doomed to disappointment as he lost by a small margin to Dick Knight far the race for treasurer. CONGRATULATED by an unidentified student, Leroy Howe reflects his happiness at winning the election. Standing between the two is Carmen Colon, victorious All Campus candidate for Junior Arts and Sciences senator. He will succeed Tom Spencer as SBG president Split In Top 4, Knight Treasurer; New Party Gains Control Of Senate By FRED PORTER Hurricane Managing Editor Presidential candidate Leroy Howe spearheaded the underdog All Campus party to a landslide victory in the elections Tuesday and Wednesday, which saw a record 3,700 votes cast and a split in the top four SBG posts. Unofficial results released to The Hurricane Wednesday night showed Howe winning by 580 votes over Liberty Forum's standard-bearer, Dave Kennedy, 1,900-1,320. AC piled up a 20-7 margin in the Senate and took one of the two contested gubernatorial races, with LF copping three uncontested governorships and an independent winning out for a fifth. Dick Chapman (AC) had 1,854 votes to Ed Auerbach’s 1,298 in the race for the vice presidency. Ann Spaulding (AC) is secretary-elect, having garnered 1,729 votes to top Kathy Hammock’s 1,453. The split in the AC slate came in« the contest for the treasureeship— the closest top four race. Dick Knight, LF's candidate for treasurer, beat out Ralph Fisch in a 1,596 - 1,553 contest. “This is the greatest landslide vote ever,” said Dr. Thurston Adams, director of student activities. Howe told the press that he was “very happy and grateful to all our supporters. We have a great responsibility ahead of us.” Kennedy, upon hearing that Howe had defeated him, said that “SBG has a fine man to lead it next year. We will function well under his leadership. I will do anything I can to help him." Election returns from the Law School showed that Buddy Weissel is chief justice-elect. He topped Howard Osterman in a 134-115 contest. AC swept into control of the Senate and made its best showing by taking all 10 senatorial posts in Arts and Sciences and having a 6-3 count in the Business School. The newly-formed AC took all three senatorships in Education. LF captured the only Senate seat from the Music School in an uncontested race. Governors-elect are A1 Graubert of AC in Arts and Sciences; Bob Kasper, Business; Sonny Bloch, Education; Bruce Baird, Engineering;— all of Liberty Forum. John Cosgriff, independent, won the Music School governorship. LF made its best showing in the gubernatorial race.
