Leif “Andy” Andersen, 747 Standards Instructor, JFK, leads a class from the new emergency procedures trainer during an evacuation drill. NEW EMERGENCY TRAINERS In early October, new emergency training mockups for flightcrews and cabin attendants were installed at the Flight Operations training center at New York. Similar units, depending on base flying requirements, are being readied for SFO, LON, HNL, and MIA. Conceptual design for the trainers came from Pan Am; the units are being constructed and installed by Burtek Incorporated, with a planned completion date of January 25 for all locations. Three kinds of trainers will be in use: 747 Cabin Evacuation Trainer. Shown above is the full-scale section of a 747 passenger compartment that includes seats, passenger service units, operable doors, and an instructor’s console with an array of controls, dials, switches and tape recorders. Primarily for Flight Service, the trainer has some unusual features: it tilts to simulate a collapsed nose gear landing, makes smoke, simulates external flames, and has programmed sound effects that reproduce normal and abnormal cabin sounds. During one of the first sessions, a student was heard to say: “It’s so real, I forgot I was in a simulator.” 747 Flight Deck Evacuation Trainer. Designed primarily for pilots and flight engineers, this unit is a full-scale section of the flight deck with an overhead escape hatch that can be opened and escape reels that operate (see right). In addition, the mockup contains an operable crew service door and escape slide package. 747-727 Cabin Door Trainer. A section of fuselage containing a jump seat with harness, an emergency light switch, and a fully weighted passenger door with slide package and girt bar.
