February 1961 Published by Pan American Airways Vol. XVIII, No. 3 AEROSPACE EDUCATION TOURING WORKSHOPS TO TRAVEL ’ROUND THE WORLD, AROUND SOUTH AMERICA AND TO EUROPE VIA POLAR ROUTE JET CLIPPER — The touring workshops of 1961 will travel on world air routes in aircraft like this Douglas DC-8. Aerospace Education workshops this summer will include three which offer instruction and indoctrination during the course of overseas travel. Two are extensions of last year’s highly successful WATCAP (for World Air Tour, Civil Air Patrol). The third is a new version of the Pacific workshop which this year will hold its sessions in Alaska, Denmark, Germany, England, France, Italy and Switzerland. WATCAP, 1961 Two world air tours for credit in Aerospace Education. 1. WATCAP Around-the-World 2. WATCAP Around South America Offered by Western Illinois University and the Division of Travel Service, N.E.A. in cooperation with the Civil Air Patrol. The pattern for the WATCAP tours was developed in the highly successful World Air Tour, Civil Air Patrol, which circled the globe in the summer of i960, and includes: In each country visited: Briefing on the civil and military aviation of the country being visited, by a qualified authority, such as the U. S. Air Attache. Visits to military air establishments. Visits to civil air establishments. Orientation in such matters as meteorology, dispatching, maintenance, communications, reservations, ticketing, traffic control, airport planning and construction, radar, military reconnaisance (to extent permitted by security considerations) all in visits behind the scenes at airports and other bases and headquarters. Projects of WATCAP 1960 which are typical of the program, and which illustrate the pattern developed for 1961, included: Inspection of the new International Airport at Honolulu and the surveillance radar at Koko Head. Activities with Hawaii Wing, C.A.P. Visit to the international aerial crossroads at Wake Island. In Japan, a behind-the-scenes visit in the Weather and Dispatching Departments at Pan American Airways at Tokyo International Airport. A visit at a private flying club in Tachikawa, Japan. In Hong Kong, a visit with the Royal Air Force Squadron and the Royal Air Force Auxiliary Squadron at Kai Tak Airport. Also, a session with Kai Tak traffic control. In Bangkok, a visit at SEATO Headquarters and a briefing on SEATO activities. In India, an inspection of civil and military aviation facilities. In Pakistan, indoctrination in the operation of Pakistan Airways which was established with technical assistance from the United States. In Italy, an inspection of the largest overseas base of the Federal Aviation Agency. In Germany, an inspection of a large MATS (Military Air Transport) base. In France, a visit at NATO Headquarters and a briefing on its activities. Salient facts regarding WATCAP 1961: ACADEMIC SPONSOR. College credit for the WATCAP tours of 1961 will be granted by Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois. Western Illinois is the leading teacher training institution in the educational travel field with 20 years of experience in this field under the direction of A. B. Roberts. BOOKINGS. These tours will be booked in the Western Illinois-National Education Association Division of Travel Service program, as sections of the tours “Around-the-World with Western Illinois” and “Around South America with Western Illinois”. The National Education Association tours, to all parts of the world, are famous among professional educators.
