THREE RECORDS CRACKED IN 48 HOURS The week end of February 8 to 10 was a big one for the PAD Clippers. Within 48 hours they cracked three trans-Pacific flight records! It all started on Saturday, February 8 when the Clipper Golden West, Captain Fred C. Richards commanding, landed at Los Angeles Airport 8 hours 26 minutes after leaving Honolulu. This was 21 minutes faster than the previous record held by the Clipper Southern Cross. On Monday, February 10, the Golden West did it again, this time between Honolulu and San Francisco. Skippered this time by Captain Merle Balch, the big Connie raced into PAD’s home base in 7 hours 6 minutes, clipping 48 minutes off the former record set by the Clipper Polynesia last May. The Golden West averaged 344 miles per hour on Monday’s record flight. Then, to top things off, the Clipper Southern Cross made it three in a row an hour and a half later by landing at Burbank 7 hours 38 minutes after leaving Honolulu, knocking 48 minutes off the record the Golden West had established only two days before. Captain James L. Fleming was skipper. His average speed was 337 miles per hour.
