Alvino Key's Orchestra to Play for Big PAA Dance April 22 at Edgewafer A big name orchestra. Alvino Rey, has been signed to play for the employees of Pan American World Airways at their annual Spring Dance. The affair, which is slated for April 22, a Thursday, will be held the swanky “Edgewater by the ach” in San Francisco. This spa- cious dance payilion. complete with four big bars, will be PAA’s EXCLUSIVELY. Alvino Rey, America’s number one guitarist, who dropped the baton on a million dollar orchestra three years ago to become a seaman first class in Uncle Sam’s Navy, has been obtained through special arrangements with Music Corporation of America. At the time Alvino enlisted, his band was one of the top ten in America with a reputation for breaking attendance records in leading ballrooms and theaters across the country, including the Hollywood Palladium, the Meadowbrook, and the Paramount Theatre in New York. Trippe’s visit to South Africa which inaugurated the new and faster Clipper service between New York and Johannesburg, wrote six new records into the Union’s tourist history. 1. Their tour of 3,000 miles in six days was without parallel in the ■¡try. No one had ever covered so h South African ground in the in me time. 2. They made the first non-stop flight from Johannesburg to Capetown and back. 3. Their flying time for this hop was automatically a new record. 4. It was also the longest nonstop flight ever made in South Africa. 5. They set up another record when Capt. C. N. Warren skipper of the Southern Cross, the Clipper which brought the party to South Africa, flew them from Johannesburg to Capetown a distance of nearly 800 miles in two hours 44 minutes. 6. Between 3 p. m. Saturday and 11:15 a. m. Pete Pond Reports Residents Of Panamville, San Francisco Really Backed the Red Cross Pete Pond, Chairman of the San Francisco PAA Red Cross Drive, had nothing but praise for Panamville, San Francisco people this week. They plunked into the kitty a tidy sum of $1,730.15! Contributions from many departments nearly hit the 100 per cent mark. Pond is especially grateful to the departmental chairmen who did the collecting. “They devoted a great deal of time to the drive and it was through their enthusiasm and work that we were able to end the campaign so successfully,” reports Pond. The money collected has been turned over to the San Mateo County Chapter of the Red Cross for distribution to proper chapters. Record Fur Shipment is Flown Via PAA from Tokyo Lot Weighed More Than 3,500 Pounds, Valued at $80,000 More than 3,500 pounds of valuable furs, believed to be the heaviest single commodity shipment ever to be flown out of Japan, arrived j in San Francisco last week via Pan American Clipper from Tokyo. The shipment, valued at over $80,000, consisted of mink, marten and squirrel pelts. The furs were forwarded by connecting air carrier to the Asiatic Trading Company in New York. In response to expanding trade between the United States and Japan. Pan American World Airways, on March 3, placed a special commodity rate on silks and furs, providing volume shippers with savings as high as 18 per cent. Aviation Daily reports possibility of Los Angeles Airport’s installation of FIDO being completed by next winter. Join Ten Other Gateway Cities in Opposing Madden's Adverse Report Final Oral Arguments Will Be Presented Late This Summer The three major West Coast Gateway cities—San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle—have joined with representatives of ten other major metropolitan cities in urging the Civil Aeronautics Board to authorize Pan American Airways to operate domestic clipper services linking these 13 areas, it was learned last week. In Briefs of Exceptions filed with the Board in Pan American Airways’ domestic case these key cities reasserted their support for the new domestic clipper service and opposed the report of the Examiner, William J. Madden, which recommended that Pan American be limited in the domestic field to serve between New York and Miami. The City and County of San Francisco, as represented by the Public Utilities Commission .objected to Examiner Madden’s contention that the proposed clipper service to this city is of minor importance. “Pan American’s application as regards San Francisco should be granted in its entirety” the Brief declares. The City of Los Angeles stated that Examiner Madden had erred in failing to recommend a certificate of public convenience and necessity be issued to Pan American Airways. The Port of Seattle, as well as the city and the Chamber of Commerce, protested that the Examiner had failed to give proper consideration to the fact relating to trade .commerce, and economic importance of the proposed new service to Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The Examiner, Seattle said, failed to consider that a certificate to Pan American Airways would give to Seattle one-carrier service to foreign destinations now enjoyed by many oth- TAKES NEW POST John Barbagelata (above),, who has served Pan American World Airways for over five years, four of which were overseas, was named Superintendent, Cargo Sales, for the Pacific-Alaska Division on April 1. Well qualified, having held District Traffic Manager positions at South and Central Pacific stations, he has more recently been Administrative Assistant to the Sales Manager. Barbagelata also holds the distinction of being the first Pacific Region traffic representative to gain experience in the Alaska Region. He was stationed in Fairbanks for 15 months in 1945.
