Volume 9 April, 1951 Number 4 Daily Paris Service Scheduled for May 1 PAA will begin daily service to Paris on May 1, it is announced by Willis G. Lipscomb, vice president in charge of traffic and sales. Three weekly flights are now scheduled and two more will be added April 10. Pan American’s weekly flight from New York to Nice will be extended to Rome on May 1, providing four-times-weekly service to the Italian capital with three flights by way of Paris and the fourth over the southern route. The increased service is the result of a new agreement signed by the US and the French Government. All Paris flights and three Rome flights will be made with double-decked Strato Clippers. The flight to Rome via Nice will be made with Constellation-type Clippers. Pan American opened service to Paris on December 17, 1950, and to Rome on January 2 of this year. Both cities were added to PAA routes by President Truman and the CAB in a decision realigning the Atlantic route pattern to provide better balanced competition between the American flag carriers. Pan American pioneered air service between the US and France when it operated the first Clipper flight between Port Washington, L. I., and Marseilles by way of Lisbon, May 20, 1939. Clipper Indoctrination Revving Up for Takeoff Clipper Indoctrination, a full-scale mockup of the Strato Clipper galley, will make its inaugural “flight” with the launching of the spring training program for newly hired stewards and stewardesses. The mockup, including regular aircraft seats, will preview actual working conditions for flight service trainees. “This innovation will be the biggest boon to passenger sales since the inception of the ‘President’ service,” says Charles H. Leach, Division flight service superintendent. The Indoctrination will make regular two-hour “flights” every day under the supervision of expert flight service personnel, for two weeks of the training period, with a different set of trainee attendants every day, under the supervision of expert flight service personnel. The tyros will welcome their “passengers,” offer cocktails and canapes, prepare and serve meals, and make all in-flight announcements. Other extensive training will be given the new personnel. Qualified representatives of the various PAA departments will describe their activities and will impress these new PAA-ers with the need for teamwork and cooperation within the company. They’ll learn all about ATTITUDE from that master of enthusiasm, “Gary” Gariepy. The Passenger Is the Number One Salesman J. T. Trippe Is Guest Of Management Club President Juan T. Trippe addressed the PAA Management Club of New York at its March meeting in Long Island City. More than 130 members of the PAA management team in the New York area turned out to greet Mr. Trippe. Mr. Trippe’s hour-long speech was “off the record.” Another speaker was Sidney Edlund, founder of the Man Marketing Clinic of New York, whose topic was “Developing the Man from Within.” He stressed the importance of individual and group objectives as keys to progress.
