Human Rights Oral History Project Interview with Alejandrina García de la Riva Miami, Florida, September 26, 2013 Interview 5312.0015 Interviewed by Julio Estorino Recorded by Javier Carrion Outline by Julio Estorino and Nancy Cermeño Interview with Alejandrina García de la Riva, co-founder of the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White) and wife of Cuban dissident Diosdado González Marrero, who was a part of the Grupo de los 75 (Group of the 75) during Cuba’s Black Spring of 2003. In January of 2011, García de la Riva joined her husband in a hunger strike to demand his release and the release of all Cuban political prisoners. After eleven days, she ended her strike but continued to protest for the release of her husband, despite his refusal to accept forced exile along with 10 other political prisoners. González Marrero was released after 8 years in prison on February 27, 2011. García de la Riva and González Marrero have been allowed to remain in Cuba. This interview forms part of the Human Rights Oral History Project (HROHP) of the Cuban Heritage Collection, University of Miami Libraries. The Project aims to capture the testimonies of Cuban dissidents. In its first phase, HROHP focuses on the Black Spring of 2003 when the Cuban government arrested 75 activists. Interviews were conducted with a number of the dissidents who served time in prison as part of the Grupo de los 75 (Group of the 75) and with members of the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White), an organization of the wives, mothers, daughters, and other female relatives of jailed dissidents. The Human Rights Oral History Project was launched in 2013 with funding from the Marlins Foundation. This oral history expresses the views, memories and opinions of the interviewee.
