Interview with Siro del Castillo, a human rights advocate and community leader on immigrant issues who worked as an architectural designer for Cuba's National Institute of Tourism and left the island in 1972. During the Mariel boatlift, del Castillo assumed a variety of responsibilities with the county and federal government's efforts to manage the crisis and provide services for refugees. Since then, he has continued to work on behalf of Cuban and other immigrants in the U.S., as well as in defense of human rights in the Caribbean. During the Cuban Rafter Crisis of 1994, he was named Assistant to the Ombudsman for the General at Guantánamo Naval Base. He is active on the boards of several civic organizations and is recognized for his community leadership.
