PALMATIER, Director. Washington, D.C. ERROL T. BALLANFONTE, Director of Center U. S. CUBAN REFUGEE PROGRAM PAUL R. B. LANE, Editor NEW CUBAN-STYLE SHOPPING CENTER FULFILLS FAITH IN FREEDOM Cuban business roots have taken a firm grip on a small section of Miami. El Centro Comercial Cubano (Cuban Shopping Center) was formally inaugurated on June 20th in the heart of Little Havana - Miami, Florida. Landlords at El /Centro are: Charles G. "Bebe" Rebozo and C. V. W. Trice, Miami banker and realtor respectively. Mr. Rebozo was selected to head up the project by the Small Business Administration during the administration of President Johnson. His intimate knowledge of South Florida's economic outlook and wide acquaintances with Cuban exile businessmen in the area made him a logical choice to direct this pilot project of the Federal Government. Assistance from the Small Business Administration is available if required. Located at the corner of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 12th Street in Miami, Florida, El Centro is a colorful splash of Spanish colonial architecture and styling reminiscent of pre-Castro Havana. Even the names of the smart new shops recall some of Havana's most prominent commercial establishments and eating places. Dr. Edgardo Buttari, internationally known Cuban statesman, diplomat, and former Minister of Commerce in Cuba, represents Cuban businessmen in their negotiations with the American owners of El Centro. Mr. Howard H. Palmatier, Director, Cuban Refugee Program attended the opening ceremonies. Talking to some of the Cuban refugee shop operators, Mr. Palmatier said, " Cuban exiles have fulfilled their hopes as well as ours in this fine example of what free men can accomplish in a free society." Visitors to Miami will find a trip to El Centro a delightful experience. A REFUGEE, AN AMERICAN BANKER AND TWO FEDERAL OFFICIALS discuss the future of El Centro Comercial Cubano recently opened in Miami, Florida.
