Emporia, Kansas, GAZETTE, February 18, 1964 This welcome to Cubans, appearing on the front page in both Spanish and English, was written by William L. White, publisher of the Emporia GAZETTE, a roving editor of the READER'S DIGEST, author, and son of the late William Allen White, Emporia's nationally-known community editor. "You are among friends. We speak different tongues, but our hearts beat together for Freedom, for which you have made the supreme sacrifice of leaving the tyranny which grips your native land, so that the soul of Cuba may still live on the soil of a sister-Republic, Almost seven decades ago, young soldiers left these prairies so that Cuba might be free. When again the bugles blow, again our men will be ready -- not to sit offshore on their ships watching while your out-numbered children die on the beaches — but to go with them, side by side, up the sand and into the palms. Until that day, our homes are your homes. - W.L.W.,f PLEASANT SURPRISE Editorial, Emporia GAZETTE, February 17, 1964 "This old town suddenly has become a center of attention because it has just gained 76 Cuban refugees who are here to begin a new life...(some of them) have begun classes at the State Teachers' College...the town is proud to have them.. .Emporia is new to them. We should make sure that it is not strange to them too. These Cuban refugees are not strangers, they are friends." A KANSAS COLLEGE ACTS TO HELP CUBAN EXILES Editorial, Kansas City TIMES, February 15, 1964 "...Kansas State Teachers1 College is setting an excellent example for other U. S. institutions, and for the country in general. Collectively, the Cuban refugees represent some outstanding talent. They have come from the island nation's better-educated classes and are devoted to democracy. The Emporia example can serve to remind of the need to help refugees from the Castro dictatorship." (See "Kansas Offers Training," Page 3) From THE CHRISTIAN CENTURY (January 22, 1964) "...the problems of resettlement remain, and the churches, which have played a large role in the resettlement program, should redouble their efforts to integrate Cubans in new communities..." (The article makes clear that the Cuban Refugee Center continues open and in need of nation-wide cooperation in providing sponsors and jobs for refugees who can become self-supporting.)
