SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Volume 12, No. 2 October 4, 1971 UNITED FUND CAMPAIGN The University of Miami’s cam- STARTS ON CAMPUS paign goal for the United Fund drive this year is $80,000 — the same figure as last year. President Stanford, campaign chairman, addressing faculty, administrators and staff, said, “Last year your generosity made it possible for the University to surpass its United Fund goal. This month each of us will be called upon once again for a contribution to our community, so that during the coming year together we will be able to meet the needs of the young, the elderly, the handicapped, the poor and all others needing our assistance. During recent years the UM has received significant support from the people of South Florida for our ambitious program to achieve the university’s great potential. I urge each of you to reciprocate by pledging your Fair Share to the United Fund.” Dr. M. Eugene Flipse, director, University Health Service, is coordinating the drive on campus. The goal was announced at a kick-off luncheon September 28 at which the guest speaker was Maurice Gusman, Miami financier who recently gave the UM in excess of $1 million for a concert hall. The UF goal in Dade is $6,148,000 for 44 agencies. MILLIONTH VOLUME To celebrate the acquisition of the millionth AT UM LIBRARY volume by the University of Miami Library, the Friends of the University Library will host a dinner Sunday, Oct. 19, at King’s Bay Yacht and Country Club. President Stanford will be guest speaker and the donor of the one millionth volume will be introduced. All UM personnel are welcome to attend. Reservations, accompanied by check, should be sent to Mrs. Sue Gregg at the library. Dinner will be $10 per plate and served at 7:30 p.m. Cocktails, at $1.25 each, will be at 7 p.m. Mrs. Emily Vance, president of the Friends, said that those persons wishing to be among the first donors toward the second million volumes can send a check for $50 or more prior to October 19 and that a suitable gift volume or set will be purchased and the donor recognized at the celebration dinner. All gifts are tax deductible. LAW STUDENTS IN PUBLIC Sixty-three UM law students this SERVICE ON-JOB TRAINING fall are participating in public service “on-the-job” training with offices of the public defender, state attorney, state attorney general, economic opportunity, and in the field of domestic relations. The third-year law students are enrolled in five clinical workshops designed to provide free legal aid to those who need it and to assist understaffed governmental agencies. Co-directors are Dr. Walter H. Beckham, Jr., UM professor of law, and Dr. Gerald T. Wetherington, UM associate professor of law. Dr. Thomas A. Natiello. man-agement, has been reappointed as a commissioner of the Fair Employment and Housing Administration of Metropolitan Dade County. His term will run until June, 1974... Dr. Sidney W. Fox, Director, Institute of Molecular Evolution, will give a paper, “A Laboratory Model of Macromolecular and Cellular Origins,” at a symposium in Mexico City, Nov. 18-19, honoring the late Mexican cosmologist, Alfonso L. Herrera... Two medical school faculty members have been granted Fellowships in the American College of Cardiology, the national medical society for specialists in cardiovascular diseases. Named were Eugene L, Nagel, M.D.. anesthesiology, and Frank J. Hildner, M.D., medicine... Drs, Thomas Hsu and Wen Chang, civil engineering, attended an invitational conference on “The Behavior of Concrete Structural Systems” held at U. of West Virginia Sept. 17, and sponsored by NSF. Dr. Hsu gave a brief talk on “What Do We Need to Know About the Torsional Behavior of Structural Concrete?”... Dr. Aaron Lipman, sociology, attended an institute for gerontologists at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, N.C. Aug. 5-12. His participation was sponsored by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development... Dr. David Cartano, sociology, received a Fulbright travel grant to Brazil this past summer where he participated in research in the field of migration... Dr. Robert Zuckerman, politics and public affairs, recently reviewed the current bestseller, “America Inc.,” for The Miami Herald...
