SPEAKING OF PEOPLE ( BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER Vol. 9, No. 15 April 21, 1969 BENITEZ, THOMAS NAMED Appointments of two men as associ- ASSOCIATE DEANS HERE ate deans of the UM School of Law were announced by Dean Frederick D. Lewis. They are Rafael C. Benitez, assistant dean and director of the Law Center since November 1967, and Thomas A. Thomas, a member of the UM School of Law faculty since 1949. Dean Benitez, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral, will be in charge of graduate studies and continue as director of the Law Center. Thomas' responsibility will be administrative and academic affairs, including admissions and registration. The appointments are effective June 1. Dean Benitez received his B.S. degree at the U.S. Naval Academy, his Juris Doctor degree at Georgetown University, his LL.M. degree at the UM School of Law. He was with Pan American World Airways for 8-1/2 years and was named vice president — Latin American Affairs for the airline in 1966. Professor Thomas received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University, his LL.B. degree from Vanderbilt University, his LL.M. degree from Harvard University. He served as the first assistant dean of the UM School of Law 1959-61. A resident of Hollywood, he was an assistant city attorney there 1955-56 and city attorney 1965 through March, 1969. An authority on wills and trusts, his two-volume “Florida Estates Practice Guide" was published by Mathew T. Bender and Co. of Albany, N.Y. in 1964. COMMUNICATION ARTS Yoichi R. Okamoto, personal photo- CONFERENCE APRIL 23-25 graphic biographer of Lyndon B. Johnson, will be dinner speaker for the 13th annual International Miami Conference on Communication Arts at the UM April 23-25. Mr. Okamoto's presentation is titled, “White House Photography with LBJ" and will be illustrated with 35 mm slides at 8 p.m., Friday, April 25 at the Holiday Inn. Keynote speaker is Allen F. Hurlburt, director of design, Cowles Communications. Other speakers include Toni Ficarola, president, American Society of Magazine Photographers; Benjamin K. Handel, magazine editor, The News, New York's picture newspaper; Jerry Greenberg, underwater photographer; Jeanloup Sieff, Paris, France, fashion photographer; Marcelo Ablaza, official photographer to the president of the Philippines. Co-chairmen are Wilson Hicks, director, University of Miami blications and former executive editor of LIFE, and Morris Gordon, new York photographer. The Conference, to be held in Brockway Lecture Hall, Otto G. Richter Library, is open to anyone interested in communications, either written or photographic. Registration fee is $40. (Students and faculty may register for $10.) Joel M. Samuel, director, Management Information Systems, has been named to the steering committee of the College and University Machine Records Conference. He's chairman of the May, 1970 meeting to be hosted by the UM... Dr. M. Robert Allen, dean, Division of Continuing Education, was keynote speaker for an Executive Personnel Management program at the Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama April 14. On April 3-5 he attended a meeting in Washington, D.C. of the Accrediting Commission of the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools of which he is vice chairman... Dr, Emmett A. Betts, research professor, Reading Research Laboratory, will attend the Board of Directors meeting and participate in the program of the National Aerospace Education Council in St. Louis, Mo. April 24-26... William H. Hulet. M.D., head of the division of medical marine science, medicine, paid an underwater visit to the Tektite habitat off the coast of St. John's Island in the Virgin Islands March 31. The project involves U.S. scientists living and working 60 contin-ous days on the ocean floor while isolated at a depth of 50 feet... Dr. Mark Murfin. chairman elementary education, led a panel on “Ideas in Action" at the national meeting of the Department of Elementary School Principals in Las Vegas, Nev. April 17, served as a consultant on the subject of team teaching in the Resource Center of the Conference April 15-16... Dr. Eugene L.
