SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 10, No. 8 January 5, 1970 NEW MEDICAL DEAN The UM's new Vice President for Medical BEGINS WORK HERE Affairs and Dean of the School of Medi- cine, Dr. Emanuel Papper, and Mrs. Pap-per, were guests of honor at a reception to introduce them to the medical community Dec. 18 at the Sheraton Four Ambassadors. President and Mrs. Stanford greeted guests and introduced them to Dr. and Mrs. Papper. The guest list included faculty and administration of the School of Medicine, the Board of Trustees, Council of Administrators, and administrators from UM-affiliated hospitals and the Board of County Commissioners. An internationally known scientist and educator, Dr. Papper joined the UM Dec. 1, coming from Columbia University where he was professor and chairman of anesthesiology. Dr. Papper, 53, obtained his A.B. from Columbia University and his M.D. from New York University. He holds honorary degrees from England and Sweden. FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR The University of Miami is once more HUMANITIES RESEARCH providing institutional funds for research projects in the humanities for the twelve-month period beginning June 1, 1970. Approximately six to eight awards will be made. Academic areas covered include drama, fine arts, government, history, language, literature, music, philosophy, and anthropology. Deadline for proposals is February 15, 1970. Awards will be announced March 1, 1970. Six copies of the proposal must be submitted to the Committee on Research Awards in the Humanities, c/o Dr. Eugene H. Man, Dean of Research Coordination. PRE-COLUMBIAN SCULPTURE "The Mother and Child," pre-Co-IN JANUARY MUSEUM SHOW lumbian sculpture from the Cisneros Collection, will be the featured exhibit of four to be shown at the Lowe Art Museum January 13 through February 1. The others will be American Art Purchase Exhibition, sponsored by the Beaux Arts; Gerard Economos' Exposition deLa Peinture, and Jim Ruffner's Contemporary Photography. The sculptures with the mother and child theme number some 60 pieces, from four inches to four feet in height and dating from 1500 B.C. to 1500 A.D. Their owner, Floren-cio Garcia Cisneros, is a former Cuban art dealer whose gallery is now in New York City. Included in the American Art exhibition will be a portrait by John Singer Sargent, "Farmer's Head" by Thomas Hart Benton, "Harvest'' by Grant Wood and "Snow Mountain" by Marsden Hartley. Economos, a French artist, will exhibit 25 of his works, which received critical acclaim in more than 20 European shows, in Stockholm, Stuttgart and Brussels, and in ten Parisian galleries. Ruffner, a Jacksonville photographer, will exhibit 20 photographs — including landscapes and portraits of children. Dr. Alfred P. Mills, chemistry, has been elected Chairman-Elect of the Florida Section of the American Chemical Society. He will serve as Chairman during the year 1971... Dr. Cecil M. Criss, chemistry, gave a seminar, ^Structure of Electrolytic Solutions" before the chemistry faculty and students at Florida Presbyterian College December 3... Dr. Duncan A. Holaday, anesthesiology, was invited to Puerto Rico as guest consultant to the department of anesthesia, Hospital de Damas in Ponce, and the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Dec. 3-9. He also addressed the Southern Medical Society of Puerto Rico, San Juan, December 6... Dr. Hazel H. Weidman, psychiatry, chaired a session on "The Tenacity of Primitive and Folk Healing Systems in the United States Today" at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association, New Orleans, and was elected chairman of the AAA's Group for Medical Anthropology. She also continues in the capacity of Editor of the Medical Anthropology Newsletter... Ben E. David, associate director of Career Planning, has been named Senior Advisor of the Convention Placement Center for the American Personnel and Guidance Association national meeting in New Orleans, March 22-26... A joint paper, "Direction Effect in Thermal Contact Conductance," by Dr. T. Neiat Veziroglu and Dr. Suresh Chandra, mechanical engineering, has been accepted for presentation at the 4th International Heat Transfer Conference to be held in Paris, Aug.31-Sept.5,1970...
