For Faculty and Staff Volume 11, No. 15 April 12, 1971 HUMANITIES RESEARCH The Committee for Research Awards GRANT WINNERS NAMED in the Humanities has announced awards to six faculty members for research projects for the 12-month period beginning June 1. The recipients of the institutional funds: *Eugene Massin, art, for “Plastics, Esthetics, and Optics.“ *Duane Koenig, history, for “Italian Armies in Russia, 1812-1943.“ *Lucas Drew, applied music, for “A Study of National Conservatories of Music and National Symphony Orchestras in Latin America.“ *Victor Stern, applied music, for “Research on the Viola d' amore and Its Repertoire.“ *J. Calvin Leonard, human relations, for “Communication — A Verbal and Non-Verbal Process.“ *David Cooper, philosophy, for “Grammar and Innate Knowledge.“ LATIN AMERICAN LAWYERS The University of Miami School of STUDYING ON UM CAMPUS Law was selected by the U.S. De- partment of State and the American Bar Association to conduct a special orientation and training program for eight Latin American lawyers April 5-16. Purpose of the program is to enable the lawyers “to become more fully acquainted with our society, our culture and especially the legal systems of the United States.“ Theme of the program is “The Role of the Lawyer in Economic Development.“ The project is sponsored by the American Bar Association and the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Cooperating in the project are the Inter-American Bar Foundation, whose vice president, R. C. Benitez, is associate dean of the UM School of Law, and the International Law Committee of the Dade County Bar Association. The lawyers, from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela, are being instructed by bi-lingual law school faculty and lecturers in law — Dean Benitez, Eduardo Le Riverend, Mario P. Goderich and John P. Corrigan, Jr. and seven Miami attorneys. They are studying contracts, torts, taxation and constitutional law, among other subjects. After the UM program, each Latin American lawyer will be placed in a law office, legal division of a corporation or a law school for approximately one month. Then they will attend a week of lectures in Washington, D.C. and visit New York City prior to return to their countries. Three UM music men will lead the Music for Peace International 1971 Concert Tour to London, England this summer. Dr. William F. Lee, dean of the School of Music, is director of music for the June 29-July 8 tour. Dr. Frederick Fennell and Dr. Alfred Reed will be concert band conductors. Some 100 young American musicians perform on the tour, designed to foster good will and international understanding between nations... Dr. Samuel Berkowitz, assistant clinical professor of pediatrics, gave a paper on the anatomy of the palate and mid-face as seen in Apert's Syndrome at the International Association of Dental Research meeting in Chicago... Albert E. J.Bachmann. management, presented a paper, “A Macro-Analytic Decision-Control Model of the Business Firm," at the annual meeting of South Carolina Academy of Science, Charleston, March 27... Dr. Arthur Brucker, Clinical Supervisor, Counseling Center, was elected President-elect of the Dade County Psychological Association... Arvey I. Rogers, M.D., medicine, has been elected to the board of directors of the Dade-Monroe Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association... Carl M. Kromp, industrial engineering and systems analysis, was honored by Goodwill Industries for his services in planning for the removal of architectural barriers in the Goodwill Building...
