BRIMMER COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER UM commencement exercises will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6 at Miami Beach Convention Hall for some 1,959 candidates for degrees. President Stanford will confer the degrees, ranging from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Approximately 1490 are candidates for bachelor's degrees, and 469 for graduate and professional degrees. Commencement speaker will be Dr. Andrew F. Brimmer, Member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System since March 9, 1966. He was nominated by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson on February 28, unanimously confirmed by the Senate on March 4, for a full term of 14 years ending January 31, 1980. Governor Brimmer will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law. The Reverend Theodore N. Tiemeyer, Pastor of Christ Congregational Church, will give the invocation, and the Rev. Guy A. Stoner, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, Wauchula, Fla., will pronounce the benediction/ Music will be by the UM Symphonic Band, Fred McCall conducting. Bachelor of Music candidate Thomas A. Border will conduct a selection from the II Guarny Overture, and Bachelor of Music candidate Walter L. DeHart will conduct the Alma Mater. UM AND L. D. PANKEY DENTAL FOUNDATION SET UP PROGRAM The University of Miami and the L. D. Pankey Dental Foundation, Inc. signed an agreement May 6 for the establishment of a graduate program in dentistry which will be the only one of its kind in the nation. Under the agreement, the Foundation — headquartered in Coral Gables — will establish an Institute for Advanced Dental Education and erect a building in the vicinity of the UM School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital medical center. The Institute will offer postgraduate courses for dentists in practice and for dental assistants, technicians and hygienists. Signing the agreement were President Stanford and Dr. Harold Wirth, D.D.S., of New Orleans, president of the Foundation. The agreement stipulates that the Foundation is "fully responsible for all costs of construction, maintenance and operation of the Institute, now and in the future, to the end that the University will in no way be subject to any financial responsibility therefor, either now or in the future." The Institute is envisioned as a 10-story structure, containing 100,000 square feet of space. It is estimated the "shell" will cost approximately $2 million, and the completed and equipped building in the neighborhood of $10 million. The Foundation was the brainchild of seven dentists who wanted to honor the accomplishments of Dr. Lindsay D. Pankey, who has been practicing in Coral Gables since 1925. Dr. Harry R. Price, Department of Accounting, received the 1971 Outstanding Professor Award in the School of Business Administration, given by Delta Sigma Pi, professional business fraternity... Dr. Helen K. Smith, education, and Dr. Richard L. Carner, Director of the Reading Clinic, conducted two micro-workshops in "Corrective Reading in the Classroom" at the International Reading Association conference, Atlantic City... Dr. Thomas A. Natiello, management, was honored by the Public Health Service in recognition for contributions toward development of a national health reporting system. Ceremonies were held at national headquarters of U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Rockville, Md.... Mrs. Mildred C. Langner, Director, Medical Library, is serving as a member of the Evaluation Committee of Southern Association of Colleges and Schools relevant to Medical U. of South Carolina's application for membership in the association. The visit is in Charleston, S.C., May 23-26... Rudolph E. Drosd, M.D., clinical associate professor of surgery, is serving one month as a volunteer surgeon aboard the hospital ship HOPE in Kingston, Jamaica... Dr. Richard H. Rupp, English dept., edited Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Marble Faun," first modern edition for students, to be published by Bobbs-Merrill May 28...
