SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER r For Faculty and Staff Voi. 9, No. 14 March 31, 1969 HUMANITIES RESEARCH The Research Council Committee for GRANT WINNERS NAMED Research in the Arts and Sciences has announced awards to seven faculty members for research during this coming summer. They are: Dr. Andrew Handler, history, for “A Survey of African History’'; Dr. Harry Hutchison, anthropology-Center for Advanced International Studies, for “Cultural Anthropological Field Research in Brazil”; Mrs. Josephine Johnson, speech, for “Chamber Theatre: Video Taped Stagings of poetic literature for instructional resources in the English Literature class.” Also, Dr. Ramon Lemos, philosophy, for “Natural Right and Liberalism”; Dr. John L. Rouse, English, for “Lucas Rauss, Integrator of Colonial American Culture”; Dr. Jess Spirer, director, Guidance Center, for “The Development of an Artist—James Abbott McNeill Whistler”, and Dr. Fred Westphal, philosophy, for “The Citizen and His Conscience: The Conflict between Moral and Civil Obligation.” Said Dr. Sidney L. Besvinick, associate dean of Research Coordination, “The funds which will enable these professors to pursue their work have been provided by the University from its own resources in recognition of the importance of research in the arts and humanities and as a token contribution to the current minimal government effort in these areas.” $200.000 TRUST FUND TO Expressing the hope they could spare AID UM LABORATORY other parents the agony they suffered at the loss of their only daughter to cancer, a Hollywood couple joined the UM School of Medicine in the battle to eliminate that dread disease. Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Haber of 1328 Wiley Street, established a $200,000 trust fund in memory of their daughter, Mrs. Raymy Haber Karp, to assist in the financing of construction of laboratory facilities at the University’s burgeoning medical center. The Haber-Karp Hematology Research Laboratories will occupy 8,000 square feet in the UM’s new 8-story, $15 million Medical Science Building, now nearing completion in the Jackson Memorial-Veterans Administration hospital area and scheduled to open by September, 1969. Dr. William J. Harrington, professor and chairman of the department of medicine, will direct the Haber-Karp Research laboratories. i Establishment of the laboratories will allow the centralization of k number of cancer research projects now conducted in laboratories throughout the Medical Center. The facilities will include laboratories, offices, preparation rooms, storage and record-keeping areas and a conference room. Dr. Taylor R. Alexander, biology, was chosen president-elect, and Dr. E, M. Miller, biology, treasurer, of the Florida Academy of Sciences at the group’s annual meeting in Gainesville March 14-15... Dr. Mariano A. Estoque. professor in the IMS Division of Atmospheric Science, and Dr, Joseph M, Prospero. assistant professor in the IMS Division of Physical and Chemical Oceanography, will participate in the Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment (BOMEX), a national effort to study joint behavior and interactions of the atmosphere-ocean system in sub-tropical and tropical waters. Field phase will be held May 3—July 28 east of Barbados... John M. Dyer, acting chairman, marketing, reviewed “Central America: Regional Integration and Economic Development” by Roger D. Hansen in the February issue of The Hispanic American Historical Review... Dr. Paul Wohlford. psychology, presented a paper, “The Use of Participant Group Methods with Culturally Disadvantaged Families,” at the Conference on Family Orientation in National Programs at Florida State University... Dr. Jack F. Ben sen and Frazer D. White, speech, were co-authors with Dr. R. W. Pigott of “Nasend-oscopy in the Diagnosis of Velopharyngeal Incompetence” published in the Feb. 1969 issue of Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery... Dr. Kessel Schwartz, foreign languages, has been nominated a member of The Royal Blue Book, 1970 edition...
