SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER f ? For Faculty and Staff Vol. 9, No. 18 June 2, 1969 DR. WENDELL PHILLIPS UM commencement exercises for some COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER 1,700 candidates for degrees will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8 in Miami Beach Convention Hall. Speaker will be Dr. Wendell Phillips, explorer, archeologist, founder and president of the American Foundation for the Study of Man, holder of 15 honorary degrees, and author of three books. President Stanford will confer the degrees, ranging from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. He will also award 3 honorary degrees — Doctor of Literature to Dr. Phillips, Doctor of Laws to Dr. George W. Gore, Jr., president emeritus of Florida A & M University and presently a lecturer in teacher education at George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville; and Doctor of Science to Grover Loening, aviation pioneer, engineer, public servant and author, of Miami, who was assistant to Orville Wright and manager of the Dayton factory in 1913. Dr. Stanford will also confer the Diploma and Gold Cross of the Order of Merit, the highest honor the University of Miami can bestow, on Fernando Belaunde Terry, president of Peru, 1963-68. A former student of architecture at UM, he is the son of Dr. Rafael Belaunde - diplomat, lawyer and professor — and the nephew of the late Victor Andres Belaunde — former president of the United Nations General Assembly — who together founded the UM’s Hispanic-American studies program. DR. CARL E. B. McKENRY Carl E. B. McKenry, Jr., director of the CHAIRMAN OF SENATE UM’s Center for Urban Studies and professor of management and law, was elected chairman of the Faculty Senate May 19 for 1969-70. Elected vice chairman was Dr. Sidney L. Besvinick, associate dean of research coordination and professor of education. Elected Senate Council representatives were Herman Meyer, Arts and Sciences; Vergil A. Shipley, business administration; Mary O. Folsom, education; Murray I. Man-tell, engineering; Dr. Besvinick, graduate school; Minnette Massey, law; Helen Purdy, library; Robert Hurley, IMS; Bennett Sallman, medicine; J. Clifton Williams, music, and Barbara Buchanan, nursing. Faculty Senate roster: Arts and Sciences — Joseph Hirschberg, Herman Meyer, Arnold Perlmutter, C. H. Dodson, Simon Hochberger, Louis L. He was given a plaque as the outstanding professional educator in Dade County in the past year... Dr. M. Robert Allen, dean, Division of Continuing Education, presented a professional paper to the International Congress on Correspondence Education in Paris May 23 and visited the University of Neufchatel, Switzerland; the University of Freiburg, Germany and University of Madrid, Spain, affiliated with the UM Study Abroad Program of which he is chairman... Initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the UM's highest scholastic honor society May 18 were Dr. W. Ivan Hoy. chairman, religion, and Dr. Beh-ram Kursunoglu. director of Center for Theoretical Studies... The Preparatory Division of the University of Miami School of Music is now known as the Division of Musical Arts, Dean William F. Lee announced... Dr. H. W. Hutchinson, anthropology, Center for Advanced International Studies, was formal discussant for the five papers presented in the session on anthropology at the 122nd annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association at Bal Harbour last month... Dave Wike. trainer for Hurricane athletes for 22 years, accepted the administrative position of assistant director of security for the UM, effective June 1... The work of Samuel A. Gunn. M.D.. and Dr. Thelma Clark Gould, pathology, was one of 14 current research topics included in Fourth Brook Lodge Workshop on Circulation and Reproductive Phenonema sponsored by the Upjohn Co....
