SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Volume 11, No. 11 February 15r 1971 SIX ELECTED TO UM President Stanford announced the elec- BOARD OF TRUSTEES tion of six new members of the Board of Trustees following the annual election meeting January 29 on main campus. Named regular trustees were Dr. James Edward Cheek, president of Howard University; William R. Colson, Miami attorney; Thomas C. Wasmuth, chairman of the board of Burdine's, and Milton Weiss, attorney and president of the Miami Beach Federal Savings and Loan Association. The first Negro to serve on the Board, Dr. Cheek, 38, received his Ph.D. from Drew University, his A.B. from Shaw University, and the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School. Before becoming president of Howard University in 1969, he was for six years president of Shaw University. Elected as alumni trustees were Walter Etling, real estate broker, and Durand A. Holladay, investment consultant. The Board also accepted the resignations of two members as active regular trustees, Jose A. Ferre and Robert Z. Greene, who became trustees emeriti. In other action, the Board re-elected Harry Hood Bassett as chairman, R. B. Gautier, Jr. as vice chairman, and all officers of the University. Membership on the Board now numbers 44 regular trustees, six alumni trustees and 15 trustees emeriti. ALUMNA RECEIVES Mrs. Charles H. (Audrey) Finkelstein ORDER OF MERIT was presented the Order of Merit, high- est honor the University can bestow, at the annual trustees luncheon. She was cited “in recognition of distinguished leadership in the fields of education and community relations.“ Honored by numerous local and national organizations for her self-effacing volunteer service to education and the welfare of citizens of all ages in the community, Mrs. Finkelstein is a cum laude graduate of the University of Miami, Class of 1938. Other guests of honor at the luncheon were commencement speaker Sir Philip Sherlock, Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean Universities and Research Institute^, and Alfred M. Gruenther, General, U.S. Army (Retired), both of whom received honorary degrees from the UM at commencement ceremonies that morning at Miami Beach Auditorium. Benjamin M. Hoffman. D.D.S.. assistant professor of oral biology, has been accepted to serve as a prosthodontist aboard the hospital ship SS HOPE in Jamaica for two months' service, March 13-May 15, 1971... The Stern-Mercadal Duo (Victor Stern, viola, and Juan Mercadal, classic guitar) performed for the Bahamas Music Society in Nassau's Chamber Music Hall, Feb. 13. Their last appearance there was in November, 1969... Three oil paintings by John B. Miale, M.D., associate chairman, pathology, are currently on exhibit at the medical library. The works are “Tahitian,“ “Nude,“ and “Flowers.“ The medical library displays art works of faculty members and associates of the medical community... Viscount Edwin Samuel, founder of the Israel Institute of Public Affairs and member of the British House of Lords, is a visiting professor at UM this semester. Lord Samuel holds a joint appointment to UM's Center for Urban Studies (CUS), and department of politics and public affairs. He is teaching and lecturing on comparative welfare state systems and on Israeli problems, according to Carl E.B. McKenry, director of CUS, and Dr. Vergil A. Shipley, department chairman. His academic offices are located at Hillel Foundation, 1100 Miller Dr., main campus... W. Averell Harriman, advisor to U.S. presidents and former ambassador to Russia and England, spoke on “America and Russia in the Changing World" at UM Feb. 3... Dr. Margaret Jean Mustard, tropical botany, has been nominated for Personalities of the South, a subsidiary of the American Biographical Institute...
