SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY 1 , NEWS LETTER Frederick Fennell, chairman, applied music, is the 1969 winner of the $1,000 Columbia University Ditson Conductor’s Award for his encouragement of contemporary American music. He received the award April 25 at the Parker Playhouse, Fort Lauderdale... For Faculty and Staff Vol. 9, No. 16 May 5, 1969 ALUMNA GIVES $10.000 A UM alumna from Michigan has TO HONOR C. W. TEBEAU given the University $10,000 to honor Charlton W. Tebeau, her former professor of history, with the request that the decision on its use be left to Dr. Tebeau. Dr. Tebeau has decided to use the $10,000 to increase the Florida History Collection housed in the Otto G. Richter Library. The Collection will be named for Dr. Tebeau. In appreciation of the gift, Dr. Tebeau has donated $500 towards building the collection and invites others to contribute money or Florida items. In her letter to President Stanford, the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, wrote that “through the years Dr. Tebeau’s teaching has continued to encourage not only me, but countless others of his students to pursue the exceedingly high standards he himself has always maintained. I am very happy to honor one of the truly most devoted and outstanding teachers any student has ever met.” Dr. Tebeau, professor and chairman of the UM’s history department, has taught history at UM since 1939, and has been department chairman since-1946. FRED W. DOERNER. JR. NAMED UM DIRECTOR OF SECURITY A veteran Federal Bureau of Investigation agent will become Director of Security at the UM May 12. He is Fred W. Doerner, Jr., who has been assigned since 1962 to the Miami office of the FBI where he is presently serving as Legal Officer. In announcing the appointment, President Stanford said, “Mr. Doerner has the qualifications, both by education and career experience, to discharge the responsibilities of Director of Security and to organize this comprehensive campus program of the University.” President Stanford said Doerner's duties and responsibilities include advising the President of the University and the Cabinet on security matters, supervision of the campus guard force, coordination of security for such events as the University Lecture Series, University Forums and other campus programs, protection of persons and property on campus, development of liaison relationship with off-campus law enforcement agencies, maintenance of liaison with University counsel on security matters. Doerner will report directly to President Stanford. Doerner received his A.B. degree from McKendree College, Lebanon, Illinois in 1939, his LL.B. (J.D.) degree from Washington ’niversity, St. Louis, Missouri 1942. He has been employed as Special «gent, FBI, since 1942, except for a period of service in the Marine Corps during World War II. He served in FBI field offices in Los Angeles, Dallas, El Paso, St. Louis and Indianapolis and in a supervisory capacity at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. for over nine years. Arden Whitacre. organ instructor in the UM School of Music, will play more than 40 recitals and broadcasts on his sixth concert tour of Germany, Italy, Denmark, England, Sweden and Norway May 24—August 1... Dr. Michael Davis, history, spoke on “The Origins and Operations of the Electoral College and the Need for Reform” for the Broward County League of Women Voters in Ft. Lauderdale April 1 and for the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Dade County April 16... Dr. Neal E. Glenn, acting chairman, department of graduate studies, music, becomes chairman effective June 1, Dean William F. Lee announced... An article, “Ancient Underwater City” by Dr. John E. Hall, archeology and art history, appears in April issue of Oceans Magazine. It describes his underwater archeological expedition in Greek waters.. Dr. Joseph G. Hirschberg. chairman, physics, gave a colloquium on “Applications of Interferometry to Plasma Diagnostics” at the University of South Florida April 25... Dr. William G. Heuson. chairman, finance, will be a panelist on “Financial Management” at Mortgage Administration Conference sponsored by Mortgage Bankers Assoc, in Minneapolis May 14-15... George F. Giampetro. director of admissions, and GeorgeW. Smith. registrar, attended the 55th annual meeting of the Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers in Dallas April 21-25...
