E R I T A 5 Thu WeÄjg lutter CHRISTMAS 19 SI Office of Public Information No 14 PRESIDENT'S REPORT GOES TO ALL ALUMNI To each of the more than 20,000 UM alumni is being sent a handsome, tersely written, strikingly illustrated 32-page report from Dr. Pearson, entitled, "Self-Portrait of a University." The white-covered, 8§ by 11 inch brochure was prepared and produced by the Office of University Publications, under the direction of Wilson Hicks, printed by Parker Art Associates of Coral Gables. "Self-Portrait of a University" is the President’s report as submitted to the Board of Trustees at the beginning of the 36th academic year. Writes Dr. Pearson in the introduction: "In 1960, good progress was made in 1, improving the quality of education; 2, bettering our financial position; 3, enlarging our physical plant." Dr. Pearson ends his introduction saying, "Before the reader leaves this page, may I suggest he look at the pictures above? Those two structures were the University of Miami in its founding year of 1926 (Note - the pictures show the Merrick building framework and Anastasia). The succeeding pages present the very same University now, 35 years later." On the following pages are described and pictured the schools, colleges, evening division, summer sessions and international research center. In addition to being sent to all alumni, "Self-Portrait of a University" will also go to a selected list of educators, foundations, editors and leaders interested in higher education. The press run was 35,000 copies. MEDICAL ALUMNI ORGANIZE . Dr. Richard Alper, of Miami, member of the first graduating class from the Medical School, is president of the recently organized Alumni Association of the school. Other officers are: Dr. John Cunio, ’58, vice president; Dr. Jack Eff, ’57, secretary; Dr. Irwin Leider, ’59, treasurer. PEARSON PENS 3,000 CHRISTMAS GREETINGS ’Twas the week before Christmas and all over the campuses lots of creatures were stirring, perhaps even some grampuses (Says Webster, "A person who breathes heavily and loudly -colloquial)" when out from the offices of Lucile the Faul went the President’s greetings, some 3,000 in all. Which is by way of saying that Dr. Pearson hand-wrote a 233-word Christmas and New Year message in his own inimitable "fist" which was facsimilied by Norman Koski’s duplicators and sped by Uncle Sam’s mailmen and C.E. Nichols’ (St. Nick) inter-officers to all faculty, administration and staff. The message emphasized that UM enters 1962 stronger in brain-power, better equipped with physical facilities. As befitting such a progressive greeting, Dr. Pearson’s cryptic script marched in a strong uphill slant. BUYING CLUB REORGANIZED The University Buying Club has emerged from a reorganization with the following Board of Directors: Dr. Bruce E. Teets, chmn.; Dr. W. Ivan Hoy, member in charge of cooperating firms; James E. Davis, member in charge of memberships; Nita Prieto, treasurer; Mrs. Sue Sharpless, secretary ex officio; Mrs. Dora E. Blackmon. Membership is open to faculty and staff members and spouses thereof. Dues are $1 a year. New members may join by calling Mr. Davis (Bus. Ed., M.318, Phone Ext. 2151). Dr. Hoy (Religion, 511 Ashe, Ext. 2223) welcomes questions and suggestions about cooperating firms. SPEAKING OF FACULTY Aaron Lipman, asst. prof, sociology, has received a Fulbright fellowship to lecture at the National University of Colombia from Feb. through Dec. Morton is paid by Edwin A. Menninger, author of "Flowering Trees of the World" in his acknowledgements in that handsome new book. Writes he: "To the research assistance of Mrs. Julia F. Morton, of the Morton Collectanea, University of Miami, and of Miss Mary F. Barrett, of Bloomfield, N.J., author of "Common Exotic Trees of South Florida," I owe the detailed accuracy of the spelling, derivation, authorship, synonymy and application of the scientific names of the trees...Feature of the luncheon Dec. 16 at Riviera Country Club celebrating the 25th anniversary of Chi Omega on UM campus was presentation of a portrait of Dean May A. Brunson to Dr. Pearson for UM’s "Gallery of Women."...Dr. Jack A. Reynolds, English, is author of "Heraldry and You," published by Thomas Nelson & Sons.
