UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI Office of Public Information January 10, 1966 Voi. 6, No. 7 IMS SCIENTISTS OFF TO ANTARCTIC Three marine biologists from the Institute ______________________ of Marine Science will participate in the first phase of a new intensive study of the Antarctic Ocean. Dr. Jack Fell, Dr. Christopher Martin and Mr. John Walsh will leave Miami Jan. 12 for Punta Arenas, Chile, where they will board the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind for the expedition into the south polar seas, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. CLARKE JOINS UM AS DPR Lynn B. Clarke, public relations executive and former Time Inc. staff member, joined the UM Jan. 1 as Director of Public Relations, succeeding Ray Cole Olding who left the University Dec. 1. Mr. Clarke was president of the PR firm of Russell, Clarke & Brantley, Inc. of St. Petersburg, which he organized in 1957 after 10 years with Time Inc. in editorial, promotional and sales positions. He is a graduate of Princeton University where he majored in history and American civilization. In addition to public and community relations for the UM, he will supervise operations of the Public Information Office headed by Nedra McNamara. LEWIS NAMED ASSOCIATE DEAN Dr. George T. Lewis, professor and chair- __________________ man of the department of biochemistry, has been appointed associate dean of the School of Medicine, effective Feb. 1. He will succeed Dr. John C. Finerty who is leaving to become dean of the School of Medicine at Louisiana State University. NCCH GETS ADMINISTRATOR Charles D. Trexler has been named adminis- _________________ trator of the National Children’s Cardiac Hospital of the School of Medicine. For the past six years assistant director of the teaching hospital and clinics of the University of Florida, Mr. Trexler also served three years as assistant manager of private patient services for the N.C. Memorial Hospital. HEW SPONSORS NEW CUBAN MED COURSE At the urging of the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the School of Medicine will offer a three-month basic medical science course to refugee Cuban dentists, veterinarians and pharmacists, beginning January 10. The program is supported by a grant from HEW through the Cuban Refugee Emergency Program. Dean Nicholson is director of the program to be administered by Dr. Rafael Penalver, Dr. John K. Robinson, and Dr. William B. Deichmann, associate director. Visiting professors will supplement the medical faculty as teaching staff.
