SPEAKING OF PEOPLE October 3, 1966 Vol. 7, No. 2 NEW BOOK HONORS ‘'Historians and History,” a collection DR. CHARLTON TEBEAU of essays in honor of Dr. Charlton W. Tebeau, chairman of history, has just been published by the University of Miami Press. The 72-page book recognizes Dr. Tebeau’s 27 years on the UM faculty, 20 of which have been as chairman of the history department. It cites him for ‘ 'outstanding service as chairman and practicing historian.’ ’ Dr. Tebeau, founder of the Historical Association of Southern Florida and editor since 1946 of its journal, Tequesta, is author of the “Chokoloskee Bay Country,” ‘'Florida’s Last Frontier,” ‘‘They Lived in the Park,” and ‘‘Florida From Indian Trails to Space Age,” the latter with Ruby Leach Carson. He recently was named ‘‘Super Prof” by Esquire Magazine in recognition of the popularity of his classes among students and last year was named one of UM’s 27 Outstanding Teachers. ‘‘Historians and History,” published Sept. 30, includes essays by Dr. Duane Koenig and Dr. Robert S. Ward of UM. Dr. Koenig edited the essays and the cover was designed by Laurence Donovan. The collection is a project of Delta Alpha chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. A revised edition of Dr. Tebeau’s ‘‘Florida’s Last Frontier” will be published by the UM Press later this month. ALUM INTERNAL FUND A preliminary report of the Annual NEARS 100 PER CENT Internal Alumni Fund shows 96 per cent participation to date. A total of 216 pledges have been received from the 225 alumni affiliated with the University, and Eugene E. Cohen, general chairman of the campaign and vice president for financial affairs, expects to report 100 per cent in the near future. Total sum received already is $3,200. Personal solicitation chairmen for the campaign are Georgia K. Del Franco, Fran M. Curci, Benjamin B. Walters, John A. Fiske, Jr., Allan A. Dana, Carl Fien, John P. Fasso, Carroll V. Truss, Jack F. Benson, Donald P. DeSylva, Peter Richard Supko, Daniel E. Murray, George Rosner, Helen C. Purdy, Fred McCall, Mary Jane Bayless, Iris M. Kiem, Dora E. Blackmon, Ray Aufort, John Galbraith and William C. Vaught. Sixteen of these divisional chairmen have reported 100 per cent participation. STEPHENS, IMS William M. Stephens, IMS, was in CATCH TODAY’S EYE New York Sept. 28 and was inter- viewed by Hugh Downs on the NBC Today TV Show. He discussed his new book, “Science Beneath the Sea,” and talked about some of the fish behavior work at IMS. Mr. Stephens showed color film made by Dr. Robert Stevenson of the installation of the institute’s new TV camera off Bimini. Dr. W. A. D. Anderson, pathology, was installed as president of the American Medical Writers’ Association for 1966-67 at that group’s annual meeting in New York on Saturday... Dr. M. Robert Allen. Dean of Continuing Education, was honored as ‘‘Citizen of the Day” by Radio Station WFUN... Dr. Eugene H. Man, Dean for Research Coordination; Dr. F. G. Walton Smith. Director of IMS; Dr. William C. Knopf, Dean of Engineering, and Dr. F ritz F. Koczy, IMS, participated in a symposium, sponsored by Gulf Universities Research Corporation, at New Orleans. Subject was Science and Engineering in the Gulf of Mexico... Dr. Frank Moya, anesthesiology, is serving as general chairman for the annual meeting of the American Society for Anesthesiologists currently under way in Philadelphia... James C. Grimm, Director of Housing, attended the meeting of the Association of College and University Housing Officers at Purdue University... Dr. Alma W. David, elementary education, was one of 10 Americans participating in a summer international school covering-‘Developments in Primary Education” at Oxford University in England... Dr, William B, Deichmann, chairman of pharmacology, is attending the International Congress on Occupational Medicine in Austria and will present a paper, “Recent Advances in the Field of Bladder Carcinogenesis.” He also will present a paper at the German Pharmacology Society meeting in Kiel...
