PLAN The work of many months of consultation, revision APPROVED BY ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL and clarification by subcommittees of the Administrative and Faculty councils, a final draft of a plan for faculty government was approved by the Administrative Council April 24. The draft will be transmitted to the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees for its consideration. Meanwhile the two subcommittees will hold a final joint session to formulate procedures for submitting the plan, if approved by the Trustees, for the consideration of the entire faculty. DR. AND MRS. PEARSON FLY TO EUROPE Combining summer vacations for 1961 and 1962, Dr. and FOR MERGER OF 1961-1962 VACATIONS Mrs. Pearson have jetted to Lisbon to start a four- week tour of several European countries. Commented Dr. Pearson as he completed the somewhat exhausting job of signing 750 certificates for honor students just prior to departure: "I think the high points of our trip will be Vesuvius, the Acropolis, the Jungfrau and the Berlin Wall." The travelers will return to home base during the latter part of May, in ample time for Dr. Pearson to preside over UM's commencement exercises. MUSIC FESTIVAL OPENS MAY 2 UM’s third annual Festival of Contemporary American Music under the guidance of Dr. Fabien Sevitzky opens May 2, in Beaumont, at 8:30 p.m, for a four-evening run. The programs, which include two world premieres, are open to the public, free. See Calendar. FAMED LAW AUTHORITY TO LECTURE Dr. Lewis B. Sohn, Harvard professor of international law, will be at UM this week for the lecture series sponsored by the Miriam and Ira Wallach Foundation. He has recently returned from the Geneva conference where he was a member of the U.S. disarmament negotiating team. See Calendar for details. UC INSTRUCTOR TO APPEAL FOR FUNDS John E. Allen, 1934 UM Business Administration FROM FELLOW ALUMNI FOR SCIENCE BUILDING graduate and University College instructor, has been authorized by Dr, Tharp to appeal in person or by phone to fellow alumni employed by UM for contributions to the 1962 alumni fund drive. According to Mr. Allen, a goal of $50,000 by May 31 has been set, of which $33,000 has been contributed. Purpose of the campaign is to obtain funds for the Science Building, a project which has top priority in UMTs building program. TEN WILL RETÍRE FROM TEACHING; Ten UM faculty members will retire from teaching REPRESENT CENTURY AND HALF UM SERVICE at the end of the academic year. Total years of service represented is a century and a half. Those retiring and the years each joined the faculty are: Dr. Richard Aldrich, asso. prof, of the history of art, 1947; Benjamin Ballantine, instr. in engineering graphics, 1957; Dr. Edward T. Bullock, vis. prof, of econ., 1957; Dr. Michael T. Carey, prof, of bus. law, 1948; Dr. Orlie M. Clem, prof, of educ., 1946; Dr. Julian D. Corrington, prof, of zoology, 1944; Mrs. Luellen Hauser, asso. prof, of bus. educ., 1942; Dr. Pedro R. Hiribarne, asso. prof, of Spanish, 1943; Dr. Henry G. Hodges, prof, of management, 1956; Dr. Russell A. Rasco, prof, of law & dean emeritus , 1930. ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL PLEDGES COOPERATION The Administrative Council at its April 24 TO NEW PRESIDENT FOR UM'S PROGRESS meeting adopted by acclamation a resolution welcoming President Henry King Stanford and pledging cooperation to UMTs third chief executive. Said the resolution: "Whereas Henry King Stanford has been duly elected by the Board of Trustees as third President of the University of Miami aiid -whereas the President and the Administrative Council must of necessity work closely together, Be it therefore resolved - That the Administrative Council takes pleasure in welcoming Dr. Stanford into the University of Miami family and that the members of the Council, individually and collectively, pledge to Dr. Stanford their utmost cooperation in working under his leadership for the continued progress of the University of Miami." MEXICAN BARGAIN STILL AVAILABLE Stop-press news from Dean Steinhoff is that a few seats are still open to faculty and staff on the plane for the tax conference weekend, May 4 through May 6, at Mexico City. Total cost is $205. Anyone interested is asked to call Associate Dean McCracken at the Evening Division. APO TO HOLD GOODWILL DRIVE On May 7 members of Alpha Phi Omega service frat will distribute bags to faculty offices with an appeal for discarded clothing and any other small items which can be restored by Goodwill Industries.
