ERITAS Tt*vfaw UNjj^IjMF MIAMI ly|pkttar MARCH 19 , 1962 Office of Public Information Jfol.,2 .NO. _2Ji WINTER INSTITUTE OF ARTS Third in the series of artists-in-residence brought to the ENDS SEASON THIS WEEK campus under auspices of the art department of the Arts Council will be Xavier Gonzalez, distinguished painter-teacher-author, who will meet with art students this week. He will also give two informal talks: tonight at 8:30 at Ponce de Leon Junior High and Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the Lowe Gallery. A revival of the Winter Institute of the ’30s, this year’s Winter Institute of Arts programmed three artists-in-residence for its first season. Previous distinguished visitors were Serge Chermayeff, professor of design at Harvard, and Bartlett Hayes, Jr., director of the Addison Gallery of American Art. Institute Director is Clayton Charles, art dept, chairman. SYMPHONIC BAND GIVES First of two Henry Fillmore Concerts will be presented by UM’s FIRST FILLMORE CONCERT 98-piece Symphonic Band, directed by Fred McCall, Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Dade County Auditorium. Proceeds will benefit high school bands which are distributing the $1 adult, 50£ student tickets. They may also be purchased at the box office. Asst. Bandmaster William Russell and music seniors Ronald Case and Marvin Feld will share conducting honors. MATH DEPT. GETS NSF GRANTS Thirty-five juniors and seniors from Dade and Broward schools will attend a Summer Science Training Program in mathematics under a $9,913 grant from the National Science Foundation, second sponsored by UM’s math dept. A new program under NSF grant of $8,900 will open in September for 23 high school seniors and five teachers for studies of calculus. The teachers will participate in anticipation of similar courses to be offered in high schools the following year. Dr. Herman Meyer will direct both programs. FRENCH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE The U.S. Office of Education has awarded UM a contract under OPENS AT UM THIS SUMMER the NDEA for an 8-week program of intensive study of French for high school teachers. Designed to improve teaching techniques and conversational ability, the French Language Institute will be limited to 40 teachers who will receive a $73 per week stipend as well as free tuition. Prof. Karl S. Pond, consultant to school systems of several states and veteran of three Institutes on other campuses, will be associate director. Director will be Dr. Sanford H. Newell, modern languages chairman, Converse College, site of previous institutes. WOODROW WILSON FELLOWS NAMED Three seniors and one-mid-year graduate have won Woodrow Wilson Fellowships for a year of graduate study preparatory to careers in teaching. They are: seniors Bradley K. Carter, political science; Richard L. Horn, history; George M. Russell, English and alumna Mrs. Sarah A. Hinds, Spanish and French. The Fellows were among 1038 chosen from 9973 candidates. They will receive full tuition and fees plus $1300 living allowance. Faculty adviser is Dr. John I. McCollum,Jr. BLOOD BANK NEARBY In case you’d like a reserve in the UM Blood Bank account for future use, there’s a branch of the John Elliott Blood Bank at 3946 S.W. 73rd St. (1 block S. of Sunset, 1 Block E. of US 1). Hours: 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. weekdays, 9-3 Sat. Another branch is at Dade Co. Hospital, Kendall. The UM account is available to all personnel at no charge, provided amounts withdrawn are replaced. SPEAKING OF PEOPLE Dr. J. H. Ferguson, chairman, obstetrics-gynecology, has been appointed regional vice chairman of the ad hoc committee on new members of the American Society of Cytology. He has also been notified that the film prepared by Dr. J. Allan Offen and himself, ’’Cold Conization of the Cervix: A Practical Technique for Maximum Hemostasis,” has been selected for viewing at the Annual Australian Medical Congress at Adelaide, May 19-23...Dr. Alfred P. Mills, chemistry, is new president of tne 500-member Florida Academy of Science. He is also co-author of two recent papers: ’’Physical Correlations for Conjugated Aliphatic Nitro-olefins,” with Dr. Kenneth F. Lampe, pharmacology, and Dr. Thomas J. Mende, biochemistry, published by the Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data, and ’’The Dipole Moments of Some Trimethyl-N-Alkylsilazanes,” with Robert L. Cook, published by the Journal of Physical Chemistry... Dr. James E. Wellington, English, is conducting a Lenten lecture series, ’’Christ and Literature,” for St. Stephens Episcopal Church School...Dr. Charles E. Lane, marine sciences, is continuing research on the Physgtli-a, (Portuguese man-’o-war) under a $14,143 Public Health Service grant to UM. ., Dr. Michael Reeve, formerly of Southhampton, England, has joined the Institute of Marine Science staff for two years to carry out a research program on the biology of sagitta.... Dr. H. Franklin Williams, v.p., attended last week’s San Francisco meeting of the United Community Funds and Councils of America, of which he is a board member.
