WEEKLY LETTER FIRST AND THIRTY-FIFTH. . . Last week the University of Miami entered upon its thirty-fifth academic year under weather conditions reminiscent of those attending its opening in October, 1926. That not-too-long-ago opening session was delayed a fortnight by a great unnamed hurricane. This 35th session got under way only one day late despite preliminary delays and transportation difficulties caused by another great hurricane, named Donna. Except for the coincidental hurricanes, the first and 35th academic sessions have little in common. In 34 years the infant institution of 1926, with some 400 students meeting in Anastasia (after an alligator had been removed from the flooded first floor) has grown up, physically, into a multi-faceted, national and international university. Now, a faculty of more than 1,000 gives instruction to more than 13,000 students. Administration and staff total approximately 1,500 men and women. TO INFORM EACH OTHER. . . This explosive expansion over the years between 1926's nameless hurricane and 1960's Hurricane Donna has made it increasingly difficult for faculty, administration and staff to keep up with what groups are planning and doing and with what goes on generally in this university city of 15,000 plus. To help solve this problem of intra-university communication and to assist in bringing the many segments of the institution into a more understanding and more homogeneous entity , the Weekly UM Letter is being re-established, after a suspension since the Thirties. FOR YOUR INFORMATION. . . The aim of the Weekly UM Letter is to serve as a clearing house for authentic information and pertinent comment about the people, plans and activities of the University of Miami. It will seek to emphasize the Five W's — Who, What, Where, When, and Why - of what goes on at the University of Miami. It will be the official weekly publication of the University. The Weekly UM Letter will be published from the Office of Public Information, 248 Ashe Bldg. It will include official notices from departments of schools and colleges, schedules of coming events, administration announcements and appointments, and interpretation of information where considered pertinent. The Weekly UM Letter will be distributed each Monday. Material for each forthcoming issue must be delivered to the editor at 248 Ashe Bldg, not later than 1 p.m. each Thursday. In the interest of accuracy no material will be received by telephone. Written material must be typewritten on one side of the paper and signed by an authorized representative of the school, college or department furnishing the information. < GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT I am pleased to have this opportunity to extend greetings to all of you with this first issue of the re-established Weekly UM Letter. Our first letter ran for a period of time during the thirties. All of us who were here at the time found it most helpful. We have other communications that go out to limited groups of our staff. The success of these convinces us that a general letter will be a valuable new medium of communication . This looks like a most successful year. Working closely together I know that we will achieve a great deal during 1960-61 . Jay F. W. Pearson President
