WEEKLY November 7, 1960 LETTER Office of Public Information Vol. 1 No. 7 PRESIDENT PEARSON brought back from Korea not only the first honorary degree ever conferred by Khung Hee University on an American—and in that country such honors, rare to foreigners, must be approved by the government—but gifts to the UM from KHU. Art treasures of the Far East are on their way by ship for the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery ...part of a collection of rare oriental coins has already arrived...but the piece de resistance to delight the heart of a zoologist is a collection of some 10,000 specimens of the flora and fauna of Korea. As he did on his return from Russia last year, Dr. Pearson plans to report on his observations of Korea, 'Hong Kong and Tokyo during an informal hour in Beaumont in the near future. Dr. Pearson1s responsibilities as president of the Association of Urban Universities will prevent his presence on campus for the opening of Homecoming Week. He will be in Cincinnati Nov. 6-7 for the annual meeting, expects to be back at his desk Nov. 9. PRELIMINARY LIBRARY BUILDING PLANS are on display in the faculty lounge, 240 Ashe. Since architects will proceed soon with working drawings, Dr. McNeal will appreciate comments or criticism as sooq as possible. Construction is expected to start around Mar. 1, to be completed a year later. THE LIBRARY'S RUSSIAN COLLECTION is being surveyed by former Curator of the Library of Congress’ Slavic Room, John Dorosh, engaged as consultant for three months. Faculty members conversant with Russian are invited to check.materials in their fields with him (ext. 2194) to determine priority for subject cataloging. ROUTINE IMMUNIZATIONS, including tetanus toxoid protection against lockjaw, are available to faculty, staff and their dependents (age 12 and over) for a nominal fee at the Student Health Center, 5513 Merrick Dr., 2-4 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays while classes are in session. (NO polio vaccine at present.) Call ext. 2371 for details. HEAR YE! HEAR YE I ...United Fund reports are due Nov. 8 in Dr. Young1s office, 225 Ashe. • ...Outgoing mail must be in the mail room by 11 a.m; Friday Nov. 11 since the U.S. post office will close at noon for Veterans Day. ...Friday Nov. 25 following Thanksgiving Day will be a holiday. THE AUDIO-VISUAL DEPARTMENT has prepared a catalog of films and film strips available to all faculty. If you did not receive a copy and want one, call ext. 2113. NEW TECHNIQUES IN SPEECH TRAINING whereby students utilize tape recorders are being tested in the recently established Speech Research Laboratory adjacent to the Speech Clinic. Frazer White and E.A, Thompson report the program will be expanded as funds for additional equipment become available. FACULTY NOTES: Pharmacology departments Dr. William Deichmann will present two papers at the Pan American Congress on Pharmacy and Biochemistry in Santiago, Chile, Nov. 12-19...Sculpture by Photo Center Manager Therold Lindquist is on exhibition at the Ft. Lauderdale Art Center this month...Edward Sofen of government was a panelist on "Political Research and Urbanism" for the Southern Political Science Association, Nov. 2-4, Gatlinburg, Tenn...Dr. Arthur Stahl, on-leave director of the Tropical Food Research Laboratory, was on campus last week between assignments with UN's FAO. Just returned from a year in India, he’ll spend the next three months in Mexico for UNICEF. ...Anthropologist Dr. Rosalie Wax has been elected to the executive board of the Society for Applied Anthropology and her sociologist husband, Murray Wax, to membership in the Societe Europeenne de Culture. Two articles by Rosalie Wax have just been reprinted in "Human Organization Research," a book published by the SAA. Both the Waxes were featured in an Oct. 8 Christian Science Monitor article dealing with the U of Colorado’s Workshop on American Indian Affairs with which they have been associated the past five summers. Late notes on participants at the SAMLA meeting in Charleston, S.C., Nov. 3-5..... They included English professors Dr. Jack Reynolds and Dr. Robert Hively; Russian, Dr. and Mrs. Berthold Friedl; Spanish, Dr. Shasta Bryant — and German, Dr. Rosborough. ED.
