t RI T A S n» WeeUal JUNE 4, 1962 Office of Public Information Vol. 2 NO. 36 PRESIDENT OF UNITED AIR LINES William A (for Allan) Patterson, President of United Air WILL BE SPEAKER AT COMMENCEMENT Lines, will be the speaker at UM's Commencement Exercises to be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in the Miami Beach Convention Hall. Born in Honolulu and educated in Hawaii and California, Mr. Patterson is one of the pioneers in the U.S. aviation industry and is famed for his leading role in bringing stability into the commercial air lines business. As one of the other pioneers put it, "Mr. Patterson made a business out of what had been largely barnstorming." Originally a banker in San Francisco, he entered the flying industry in 1929 as assistant to the president of the Boeing Airplane Company. Four years later he became a vice president of United Air Lines which had been organized from a combination of four other early air transport companies. In April, 1934, he was elected to the United Air Lines presidency, which he has held ever since. Miami has become a major point on his airline’s system through the merger of Capital Air Lines with United. As a trustee of Northwestern University Mr. Patterson is closely connected with higher education. PEARSONS HONOR GUESTS AT ALUM BANQUET; Dr. and Mrs. Jay F.W. Pearson will be honor JUDGE SUTTON TO BE INSTALLED AS PRESIDENT guests at the annual spring reunion banquet of UM's General Alumni Association Wednesday evening, June 13, at the Coral Gables Country Club at 6:30 p.m. Following the dinner, Judge Ruth Sutton, president-elect, will take office. Other officers and directors, now in process of election, will be installed. As president, Judge Sutton, alumna of the Class of 1930, will succeed to the office held from 1943-1946 by her late husband, Otis B. Sutton, famed football star and noted attorney. John E. Allen, chairman for the banquet, issues a special invitation through VERITAS to all faculty and staff alumni to attend. Tab for the dinner is $3.50. UM HOST OF FIVE RELATED GROUPS In connection with the 81st annual meeting of the AND AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSN. DELEGATES American Library Association at Miami Beach June 17-23, UMTs Otto G. Richter Library will be host to five related groups for sessions from June 14-20. Delegates to pre-conference meetings will be housed in UM residence halls. On June 21, some 500 delegates to the ALA conference will visit UM on a tour as guests of the City of Coral Gables. Dr. Archie L. Mc-Neal, director of UM libraries, is a member of the executive committee of the ALA. "VALE!" DICIT VERITAS USQUE AD AUTUMNUM Living up to its Latin title, VERITAS thus folds its tent and steals silently away until September. Meanwhile, it issues an appeal to all UM faculty and staff members who are traveling out of the US to academic and other meetings to give news of their travels, speeches and other activities to the Public Information Office. All such news adds to the recognition of UM at home and abroad. To all its readers UM wishes a salubrious summer. SPEAKING OF PEOPLE New York University this week is conferring the Doctor of Juridical Science upon Prof. Albert E. Harum, Bus. Law. Dr. Harum holds his BBA and LLB from UM and LLM from NYU. He completed his doctorate under a Ford Foundation Fellowship.... Dr. Richard E. Strain, asso. prof, of neurosurgery, was cited by his alma mater, Maryville College, for his work with the White House People to People Committee and for work in his field. He goes to Africa, Europe and Asia under auspices of the Committee in July....Commencement speakers from UM last week included Dr. H. Franklin Williams at Miami Military Academy and Broward County Evening High School, Dean John Bitter for Ransom School...Dr. Tharp represented UM at the Governor's Conference on Higher Education in Tallahassee May 29-30. Dr. F. G. Walton Smith presented a report on ?TTho Space and Underwater Engineering Institute...Mrs. Eva Friedl, instructor in Russian, presided over the annual meeting of the Florida chapter of AATSEEL and was elected secretary for 1962-63....Five members of the UM Law faculty are authors of chapters in the fifth survey of Florida Law published in the UM Law Review. Authors and chapters are: Ralph E. Boyer, "Real Property Law;" Daniel E. Murray, "Family Law;" Hugh L.Sowards, "Corporations and Corporation Finance;" Thomas A. Wills,"Criminal Law;" S. A. Bayitch, "International Law."..Three members of the Modern Language Faculty have assisted in the evaluation of local high schools— Dr. William P. Dismukes, Dr. Reuben Y. Ellison and Asso. Prof. Karl Pond... .After 21 years with UM one of the best known Ashe Bldg, inhabitants, John Erb, assistant to the treasurer, retired May 31....Also retiring are three School of Music faculty members — Ralph Roth, professor of piano and theory since 1940; John Belov, professor of violin and theory since 1938, and Frances Hovey Bergh, professor of music education and music literature since 1932....Michael A. DeCarlo, assistant to Dean Vonk and coordinator of academic counseling at UC, is moving to Tampa to become Dean of Men at the University of Tampa, July 1.
