Prior to his election he served a three-year term as secretary- jreasurer... For Faculty and Staff November 28, 1966 Voi. 7, No. 6 UM GETS $3 MILLION The U.S. Public Health Service has awarded GRANT FOR FACILITY a $3,054,432 construction grant to the University of Miami for a center for the study of mental retardation. The UM is committed to raise $1,018,143 toward the cost of the new structure. The federal grant, announced in Washington by Senator Spessard Holland and Representative Dante Fascell, is the largest single grant in UM history. Dade County has set aside 4-1/2 acres on the southeast corner of N.W. 12th Avenue and 16th Terrace near Jackson Memorial Hospital for the new facility. Construction will probably begin in November, 1967, with opening in September, 1969. The building will be known as the University of Miami Facility for Study of Mental Retardation. Graduate students from UM, University of Florida, Barry College and Florida State University will get advanced training at the facility and eventually all mental retardation programs in the South Florida area are expected to be linked to the UM facility. Its university-wide character is underscored by the fact that administrative responsibility will lie with Dr. Armin H. Gropp, UM’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties. He will be advised by a board of deans, including Dr. John A. Harrison, Graduate School; Dr. Emmet F. Low, Jr., College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. John R. Beery, School of Education, and Dr. Hayden C. Nicholson, School of Medicine. Dr. Samuel T. Giammona, associate professor of pediatrics, will serve as scientific director. Activities will be carried out under supervision of an operating committee — Marjorie J. Martin, director, nursing division; Dr. Robert M. Allen, director, psychology division; Drs. G. F. Smith and W. L. Nyhan, directors, medical division; Frances C. McGrath, director, social work division, and Dr. DeForest L. Strunk, director, education division. Designed by Pancoast, Ferendino, Grafton & Skeels, the facility will have a nine-story tower connected to a two-story school section. The tower will house laboratories, training facilities, clinical rooms, a two-story auditorium and a small television studio. The facility will be a training center for up to 300 students a year in special education, psychology, pediatrics, medicine, psychiatry, neurology, nursing, social work and other fields. MEDICAL LIBRARY The UM School of Medicine has received a ' FUNDS DONATED grant and donation totaling $1,640,000 to erect a library building. The donors' names will be released at a later date and the Medical School Library Building will be named in honor of the principal donor. The library is part of clinical facility construction in the University of Miami Medical Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. J. Riis Owre, associate dean of faculties, attended vthe meeting of the Southern University Press directors in Gainesville... Dr. W. Ivan Hoy, chairman, religion, will be in charge of visiting dignitaries and opening procession of the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches meeting Dec. 4-9 at Miami Beach... Dr. Michael J. Stolee. director, South Florida School Desegregation Consulting Center, will speak Dec. 2 to the Leadership Training Institute, Department of Classroom Teachers, Florida Education Association in St. Petersburg... Drs. Mary L. Harby and Mary Louise Lake, elementary education, attended the Florida Reading Association Conference in Daytona Beach.*. Dr. John E. Davies, assistant professor of medicine and director of Community Studies on Pesticides, Dade County, recently attended the American Public Health Association meeting in San Francisco... Dr. Joseph J. Moder. chairman, industrial engineering, attended the annual meeting of the Operations Research Society of America in Durham, N.C.... Dr. Howard B. Powell, chemistry, attended the Southeastern Regional meeting of the American Chemical Society in Louisville and presented a paper, * 'Enthalpy and Entropy of Ionization of Some Fluoroalkyl-Mercury (II) Hydroxides."...
