WEEKLY LETTER Tune 8, 1961 Commencement Extra COMMENCEMENT At 8 o'clock Monday evening in the Miami Beach Convention' Hall the Univer- ♦••••*••••••• siry of Miami will conclude its 35th academic year with commencement exercises at which Dr. Jay F.W. Pearson will confer nearly 1,000 undergraduate and grad-__uate degrees. Awarding of the first two Ph.D. degrees in UM's history will mark a significant milestone in the university's advancement to mature stature among American —-institutions of higher learning. Topping the graduate degrees in numbers will be 69 MD's, nearly three times the number awarded to the first class graduated from Medical School. Following the trend reflected by major universities throughout the US the program will not include a commencement address by an outside speaker. Dr. Pearson will speak briefly on the "state of the university/' NEW ADMISSIONS, REGISTRARS, Effective July 1 changes in the offices.of Registrar, Admis-SPACE SETUP sions, Space Coordinator will become effective. Registrar ........................... E.M. McCracken, assisted by C.W. Smith, will be in full charge of the records of all students admitted to the University. This office will be designated as the Registrar's Office. Gerald E. Reese will take charge of the Office of Admissions with the title of Director of Admissions. Director Reese, Douglas E. Matthewson and John Evans will handle all recruitment and admissions and will be responsible for maintenance of records of all students until they are admitted to the University. Admissions to the Graduate School, School of Law. and School of Medicine will be handled as in the past. W.H. Charlton, assistant registrar, will become supervisor of schedules to work with Donald C. Bulat in charge of all schedules and space utilization. This will include scheduling of classes, athletic events, social events, extra curricular activities, student activities and every item in the University calendar. Deans and directors of departments will be responsible for planning academic activities which will be coordinated by Bulat and CharltQn. LAWSON NAMED INTERIM DEAN Effective July 1 is the appointment, announced by Dr. Pearson, .......................• • of Dr. Robert B. Lawson, professor and chairman of pediatrics, as interim dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Lawson, who holds his AB and MD from Harvard, came to UM in 1954 from the Bowman Gray Medical School of Wake Forest College. He will serve as Interim Dean until a new dean is appointed and installed in office. NEW DUTIES FOR DR. FLIPSE Dr. M. Eugene Flipse, professor of preventive medicine and ......................... director of student health center, has been appointed executive assistant chairman of the Department of Medicine. KERDYK HEADS ALUMNI New officers and directors of the University of Miami Alumni Associa- .................. tion have been elected. President is William H. Kerdyk, insurance executive. Judge Ruth Linder Sutton is president-elect for '62. Other officers are Edward Dunn, vice pres., Nancy Gramley Aslobrook, secretary, Frank W. Guilford, Jr., treasurer. TUESDAY, JULY 4, HOLIDAY The University will observe Tuesday, July 4, as a holiday. All ....................... offices will be closed. Where it is necessary to maintain services, employes will be given compensatory time off at the department's convenience. 0LAFS0N EDITS BULLETINS William J. Olafson, UM alumnus (BJ, 1956), has been appointed ................... editor of the University of Miami Bulletins. He succeeds Mrs. Catherine Lemna who resigned to resume full time teaching. For the past three years Editor Olafson has been instructor in journalism at Palmetto High School. JULY 17 SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE Dr. H. Franklin Williams issues a reminder that all requests ......................... for staff and dependent relative scholarships must be in for the second summer session at the office of staff personnel by July 17. GFWC HEARS BALSEIRO By invitation of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, Dr. Jose i ................■••• A. Balseiro, professor of Hispanic Literature, is delivering one of the major addresses to the GFWC's 70th annual convention at Miami Beach. Using as his title "Beware, Beware of Lorelei," Dr. Balseiro's address spells out the perils of Communism in Latin America. At the request of the U.S. State Department, Dr. Balseiro has translated his address for transmission by the State Department to Latin American publications. COMMENCEMENT EXTRA This is an extra edition of the Weekly UM Letter issued to furnish faculty and staff with up-to-date information as the University winds up its thirty-fifth academic year. Regular weekly issues will be resumed in September. REMINDER - As announced by Dr. Tharp, faculty members are expected on campus by September 6.
