Sept. 21, 1964 ‘DON’T BE COMPLACENT’ —DR, STANFORD Voi. 5, No. 1 A more mature outlook and seriousness ________________ of purpose may be detected among the students of the 1960’s, UM President Henry King Stanford told the first faculty meeting of the year, Sept. 8 in the Brockway Lecture Hall of the Otto G. Richter Library. “If this be true,” Dr. Stanford said, “then we are challenged to respond... We cannot become complacent.” As to teaching tools, Dr. Stanford quipped, “There is still no replacement for the ‘Built-in, Orderly, Organized, Knowledge Machine,’ sometimes abbreviated‘B-O-O-K.’” Other faculty meeting news items: DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM UM’s ten-year, $93 million Golden An-REACHES $5.7 MILLION niversary Development Program has gathered assets of $5,713,016.07 since it began in February,Vice President for Development Donald V.Stoph-let reported. This includes 30 pledges from the Board of Trustees totaling more than $1.58 million. A single government grant (see page 3) has furnished another $1.65 million. The balance of the assets has come from private foundations and corporations. DEAN OWRE EXPLAINS SELF STUDY PROGRAM Dr. J. Riis Owre, associate dean of the faculties, explained to the faculty audience the blueprint and philosophy of the institutional self study now underway for the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. He asked for continued cooperation from all segments of the University. The study, which is expected to be published in some form, will be completed in June of 1966. FACULTY CLUB PLANS Preliminary architect’s sketches are EARLY OPENING--MYERS complete for the proposed quarter-million dollar Faculty Club, to be built on a site near the physical plant building, Dean Clark Myers reported. “We are hoping to have our first party in the new club by the end of this academic year,” he said. A dues schedule will be announced soon. NEW YEAR BRINGS Dr. Werner A. Baum, vice president NEW FACULTY FACES and dean of the faculties, introduced many of the more than 75 newcomers to the faculty. Among them: Dr. August Freundlich, Lowe Gallery director and art department chairman; Dr. Sidney Fox, Institute of Molecular Evolution director; Dr. William J. Harrington, medicine chairman; Frank Nelson, director of debate; Dr. Waino Suojanen, management chairman, and others. (Deans are profiled on page 3.)
