SPEAKING Jan. 4, 1965 Vol. 5, No. 8 DR. HARRISON NAMED TO GRAD DEANSHIP Dr. John A. Harrison, currently chairman ____________________of the University of Florida's history department and its high honors program in the College of Arts and Sciences, will become associate dean of UM's Graduate School, May 1. The distinguished Asian studies scholar also will hold the rank of professor of history. He earned his baccalaureate degree at Columbia University and his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Harrison is a multilingual scholar and author who has traveled frequently to the Far East under Fulbright, Wenner-Gren and Ford Foundation grants, among others. He has been on the Florida faculty since 1949. Dr. Harrison will succeed Dr. Carroll V. Truss, who will return to full-time teaching and research as associate professor of psychology at the end of the current academic year. SCHWINGER. FINER VISITING LECTURERS Dr. Julian Schwinger, Harvard physicist, ______________________ and Dr. Herman Finer, University of Chicago political scientist, both begin UM stays as visiting lecturers this month. Dr. Schwinger, recently named by President Johnson to receive the National Medal of Science, will instruct in the department of physics during January. He also will participate in the second annual Conference on Symmetry Principles at High Energy, Jan. 20-22. Dr. Finer, author of some of the most popular works in political science, will be visiting lecturer in the government department throughout the spring semester. The Roumanian-born scholar taught previously at UM during three summer sessions in the 1950's. SCIENCE EVENTS DRAW Many of the nation's most distinguished WEBB, OPPENHEIMER scientists will gather at UM, Jan. 20-28 for a series of science conferences and other events. Highlights of the schedule include: —An address by James E. Webb, National Aeronautics and Space Administration administrator, at mid-year commencement exercises, Jan. 25 in the Miami Beach Auditorium, 10:30 a.m. —Dedication of the new Computing Center with Dr. J. Herbert Hollomon, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Science and Technology as speaker, also Jan. 25, 3 p.m. — The second annual Conference on Symmetry Principles at High Energy, Jan. 20-22. Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, Dr. Alvin M. Weinberg, Oak Ridge National Laboratories director and Dr. Schwinger will be among speakers. See page 3 for other events. PEOPLE “Experiments in Molecular Evolution and Criteria of Extra-terrestrial Life," are discussed by Dr. Sidney W. Fox, molecular evolution, in the current Bio-Science. Gilman, zoology, presented a paper on “Mating Types in Paramecium Caudatum from Taiwan'' at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Montreal... Dr. Jose A. Balseiro, foreign languages, was elected a presiding vice president for the recent Congress of the Academies of Letters in Buenos Aires... “Interest Practices in Modern Business" are examined by Dr. Howard A. Zacur, accounting, in December's The Balance Sheet... Dr. Howard M. Lenhoff, Laboratory for Quantitative Biology, was an invited symposium speaker at the American Society of Zoologists meeting in Nashville... John A. HtevensV civil engineer-ing, will attend a Harvard soil mechanics program this spring under an NSF fellowship... “Profil de la France nouvelle," a textbook co-authored by Dr. Reuben Y. Ellison and Albert Raffanel, foreign languages, has been published by the American Book Co....
