i ' i June 1, 1965 Vol. 5, No. 18 1-1004- GRADUATE IN TWIN EXERCISES More than 1,100 baccalaureate and graduate degree candidates are expected to receive degrees in separate commencements, June 8 in the Miami Beach Auditorium. Prior to final exams, 962 undergraduates were eligible to graduate at thè 8 p.m. ceremonies at which Dr. Walt Whitman Rostow, chairman of the Department of State Policy Planning Council, will be speaker. The candidates by schools: Arts and Sciences, 405} Business Administration, 295; Education, 202; Engineering, 44; and Music, 16. There are 219 candidates for graduate degrees at the 10:30 a.m. ceremony where President Stanford will be principal speaker. The degree candidates: M.D., 73; LL.M., 1; LL.B., 53; Ph.D., 11; Ed.D., 2; M.A., 32; M.S., 26; M.Ed., 13; M.B.A., 7; and M.M., 1. 17 GET FUNDS FOR SUMMER WORK Seventeen faculty members—11 in the sciences _____________________ and six in the humanities—have been awarded summer research funds by the UM Research Council. The separate programs have the common purpose of encouraging new research or researchers in the various disciplines. Recipients of the humanities grants, derived from University funds, were: Dr. Ross C. Beiler, government; Dean William F. Lee, music; Drs. Ramon M. Lemos and Jack W. Painter, philosophy; Eugene Massin, art; and Dr. James E. Wellington, English. The science summer awards, from a National Science Foundation institutional grant, have been awarded to: Dr. A. R. Condom, electrical engineering; Dr. C. M. Criss, chemistry; Dr. D. B. Cruse, psychology; Drs. W. Drost-Hansen, Colin Little, C. Richard Robins and Russell Snyder, IMS; Robert L. Kelley and Dr. Hermann Simon, mathematics; Donald F. Menker, radiology; and Dr. Morris Rockstein, physiology. SHAKESPEARE IS SUMMER’S ‘BMOC’ The Bard of Avon will enjoy his sixth consecu- __________________ tive summer reign on UM’s campus, July 6- August 1 as the Southern Shakespeare Repertory Theatre presents four plays in nightly rotation in Beaumont Lecture Hall. Dr. Delmar Solem, drama chairman and Theatre director, reports that thespians from throughout the nation have been recruited to play in: “Romeo and Juliet,” “Henry IV,” “As You Like It,” and “The Merchant of Venice.” For tickets: Ext. 2787. Victor Stern, music, was featured soloist at a Stetson University Symphony Orchestra concert in May where he gave the first southern performance of a concerto by Han-doshkin... Dr. Jose A. Balseiro. foreign languages, has been invited to read a paper on Ruben Dario at the Second Congress of the International Association of Hispanists in the Netherlands in August... Dr. H. A. B. Wiseman, civil engineering, was an invited participant in the 17th American Institute of Steel Construction, National Engineering Conference in Memphis... Dr. W. Ivan Hoy, religion, is newly-elected president of the Reserve Officers Association, Department of Florida... Dr. Stovan Bavitch. law, is author of “Codification in Modern Times,” in Civil Law in the Modern World, just published by Louisiana State University Press... Frederic Ashe, music, is composer of the symphonic concert piece, "Sinfonia,” just published by Volkwein Brothers, Pittsburgh... Mrs. Isabella O; Klingler. dissertation secretary, recently received a certificate of merit from the Graduate Business Society and a gold charm from the Graduate Alumni Association... JR. TRUSS CONTINUES In view of the appointment of Dr. A. H. Gropp AS ASSOCIATE DEAN as Dean of the Faculties Aug. 1, Dr. Carroll V. Truss has consented to remain as Associate Dean of the Graduate School through May 31, 1966. Also Associate Dean of the Graduate School is Dr. John A. Harrison, who joined UM May 1.
