SPEAKING OF PEOPLE THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff Vol. 9, No. 9 January 20, 1969 ROBERT WILLIAM SARNOFF Robert William Sarnoff, president COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER and chief executive officer of RCA, will be the commencement speaker at ceremonies Friday, January 24 at 10:30 a.m. at Dade County Auditorium. President Stanford will confer degrees on approximately 700 candidates and also will award the honorary degree Doctor of Laws to Mr. Sarnoff. Mr. Sarnoff, 50, already the recipient of 10 honorary degrees from colleges and universities in the United States, is chairman of the board of trustees of Franklin and Marshall College, a member of the Board of Overseers Visiting Committee of Harvard College, and a member of the Visiting Committee of the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of California, Los Angeles. UM RECEIVES $300.000 GRANT The UM has received a grant of FROM THE FORD FOUNDATION $300,000 from the Ford Foundation to support programs in urban research and planning through its Center for Urban Studies. The grant is payable over a three-year period. "The grant from the Ford Foundation assures an exciting and successful inaugural period for the University's Center for Urban Studies," President Stanford said. "The grant will make it possible to expand the scope of the Center and make it a much more effective force within the University and the broader community." Acting director of the Center is Dr. Carl E. B. McKenry, Jr., associate professor of management and law, who said the grant will be used as follows: ...For land, air and water pollution research and planning in metropolitan Dade County. ...To support the UM Law School's law-for-the-poor program and to train young lawyers for work in this field. ...For economic and social research and planning in conjunction with Florida Memorial College. ...For research and planning studies and activities in selected major urban problems of metropolitan South Florida. The Center for Urban Studies is designed to link the UM to the surrounding community, coordinate urban affairs projects already underway in several departments and undertake research, analysis and ming for southeast metropolitan Florida as a whole in relation to urban problems. The Center will also assist in the development of curriculum in urban planning. The Center was established last December after an 18-month study as to how the University might best organize for this new responsibility. Frank Moya. M.D., professor and chairman of anesthesiology and associate dean for hospital affairs, was elected President-Elect of the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairmen at the annual meeting in Chicago... President Stanford received the Hannah G. Solomon Award from the Greater Miami Section of the National Council of Jewish Women January 8. The award is given annually to a local man or woman for outstanding work in the field of education and youth... A paper, "A Genetic Disorder of Uric Acid Metabolism and Cerebral Function," by W. L. Nyhan, M.D., chairman, pediatrics, appears in a French journal, Comptes Randu du Premier Congres de l'Association Pour Y Etude Scientifique de l'Arriération Mentale... Dr. Eugene H. Man, Dean of Research Coordination, has agreed to serve an additional term as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Council of University Research Administrators... Recent addition to Army ROTC staff on campus is Lt. Colonel Robert W. Black, who served in the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam where he was senior district adviser for Rach Kien District, Long An Province... Dr. Aaron Lipman, sociology, was the senior author of "Aging in the U.S. — Ascription of a Terminal Sick Role." published in the January issue, Vol. 53 of Sociology and Social Research...
