SPEAKING OF PEOPLE r THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER ( For Faculty and Staff December 2, 1968 Voi. 9, No. 6 ROSENSTIEL FOUNDATION A gift of $12,000,000 to the University GIVES UM $12,000,000 of Miami — largest single gift in its 43-year history — has been announced by President Stanford. Dr. Stanford’s announcement came as a confirmation of a story released November 21 by the Dorothy H. & Lewis Rosenstiel Foundation in New York City. Dr. Stanford said Mr. Rosenstiel had made this verbal commitment some time ago both to him and to Hank Meyer, UM trustee and friend of Mr. Rosenstiel, following a series of meetings. Because of Mr. Rosenstiel’s long interest in the oceans as a source of food and medicine, the major portion of the gift, $8.8 million, will be used as endowment for the Institute of Marine Sciences. Dr. Stanford said the Institute will be renamed in honor of Mr. Rosenstiel and his late wife, Dorothy H. Rosenstiel. A total of $3.2 million will be used to match a federal grant of $2.8 million to enable completion of the top three floors of the eight-story medical sciences building now under construction. It will henceforth be known as the Dorothy H. and Lewis S. Rosenstiel Medical Sciences Building of the School of Medicine. Mr. Rosenstiel’s gift to the University’s Golden Anniversary Development Program was described by President Stanford as * "recognition of the tremendous strides the University of Miami has made in recent years toward its goal of becoming a truly distinguished center of learning.” Of the $8.8 million allocated to the IMS, Dr. Stanford said, it is anticipated $5 million will be for permanent endowment for operating expenses and $3.8 million will be placed in a separate endowment fund, the income and/or principal to be used to match government or private grants as required for the future development of oceanography, particularly its relationship to medicine at the UM. A resident of New York City and Miami Beach, the philanthropist became interested in the UM through his friend, Hank Meyer, nation-lly known public relations executive and a trustee of the University.
