Apr. 19, 1965 Voi. 5, No. 15 NEW STUDENT UNION Dedicatory ceremonies for UM’s new DEDICATION, APRIL 22 $3.32 million Student Union are scheduled for April 22, beginning at 4 p.m. All faculty, staff and friends of the University are invited to join the students for the dedication and the open house which follows. Speakers will include President Stanford, Board of Trustees chairman Oscar E. Dooly, Josh Vernaglia, SU Board of Governors chairman-designate; and James Blosser, Undergraduate Student Government president for 1959-60. Ken Hunt, current USG president, will be master of ceremonies. Entertainment will be provided by the Singing Hurricanes and the UM Band of the Hour. (Also see Page 4.) SATURDAY REVIEW ED Richard L. Tobin, managing editor of the TO KEYNOTE MCCA Saturday Review, will be keynote speaker at the ninth annual Miami Conference on Communication Arts, April 21-23 at the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery. More than 150 journalists from the U.S. and several European nations will attend the sessions, focused this year on “photography’s new generation” and “the changing world of photo-communication.” For registration details: Ext. 2127. A special exhibit of the photographs of Andre Kertesz, a pioneer European photographer, will be on display in the Gallery in conjunction with the Conference. It will remain on display for the public through May 19. CITIZENS BOARD Members of UM’s Citizens Board had DRIVE SPURS GADP secured cash and pledges of over $1.1 million in their drive to add $3.8 million to the Golden Anniversary Development Program as Veritas went to press. A jump in the total was expected at a scheduled April 15 report meeting. Among the corporate commitments secured thusfar is a $50,000 pledge from Sears Roebuck, the largest grant ever given a southeastern private institution by the national chain. Total cash and commitments in the GADP now exceed $7.25 million, according to Edward G. Coll, assistant to the vice president for development. Dr. W, A. D. Anderson, pathology, has received the 1965 Ward Burdick Award of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists for meritorious contributions to the field... C. M. Kromp. industrial engineering, is newly-elected president of the South Florida Technical Societies Council... Dr. Charles B. Metz, molecular evolution, was at Cape Canaveral to help direct a fertilization experiment conducted during the Grissom-Young orbital flight. He then traveled to Tokyo for an NSF international symposium on developmental biology... Louis A. Miller, placement center director, has been named director of College Placement Services, Bethelem, Pa., in addition to his UM duties... The Southeastern Theatre Conference passed a resolution lauding the UM department of drama and its students for their tour of European Army Camps last winter. Dr. Delmar Solem accepted the honors at the group's 16th annual meeting in Louisville... Donald Cook, mailing center, is leaving UM after nine years to accept a post with Maule Industries in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island... Dr. August L. Freundlich. art-Lowe Gallery, chaired a panel on university-community relations at the National Art Education Association national convention in Philadelphia... SYMPHONY SCHEDULES The UM Symphony Orchestra conducted .'RIBUTE TO UM by Fabien Sevitzky closes out its final season as a semi-professional organization with a pair of concerts, May 2 and 3, dedicated to UM’s 38 years of support. Richard Wagner’s opera “Lohengrin,” featuring the University Choral Union and six guest soloists will be sung in English. Both concerts will start at 8 p.m. For tickets: MO 1-4960.
