SPEAKING OF PEOPLE / THE BI-WEEKLY NEWS LETTER For Faculty and Staff October 31, 1966 Voi. 7, No. 4 UNIVERSITY PRESS The University of Miami has appointed its DIRECTOR NAMED first professional Director of the University Press. He is Ernest A. Seemann, presently director of the University of Alabama Press. Seemann is expected to assume his new duties before the end of the year. Dr. J. Riis Owre, Associate Dean of Faculties at UM and acting director of the University Press Committee, said, “We consider this appointment of great significance and are delighted to have Mr. Seemann’s acceptance. Under his direction we expect the University of Miami Press to have an important development that is meaningful for the university, the state and the nation.” He added that the University hopes to greatly expand its press, under Seemann’s directorship, toward the goal of publishing 20 to 25 books annually within the next five years. Seemann, 37, was born in Leipzig, Germany. He holds the equivalent of a B.A. degree in classical languages. In Germany he completed the 4-1/2 year training program of the German Book Publishers Council in publishing, bookselling, photo-engraving, printing and book-binding, and was awarded a Certificate of Professional Standing. He has been director of the University of Alabama Press since 1963. He has also served as production manager and book designer of the Indiana University Press and Louisiana State University Press, and was a production assistant, Crown Publishers, New York. Before coming to the U.S. in 1959, Seemann worked as managing editor, production and promotion manager for several German commercial publishing firms. He is a translator (from German and French), also reads Italian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. He is a U.S. citizen and is married. WHITTEN CEREMONY Formal ceremonies renaming the University AT UNION NOV. 10 of Miami Student Union the “Norman A. Whitten Memorial Student Union” in honor of its late director will be held at noon Thursday, Nov. 10 during Homecoming on campus. The unveiling of the name on the east side of the $3.2 million building near Merrick Circle will be by Mrs. Whitten. Others taking part will be President Stanford, Oscar E. Dooly, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and James P. Fleming, president of Undergraduate Student Government. Benediction will be by Dr. W. Ivan Hoy, chairman, department of religion. The Alma Mater will be played by the Band of the Hour. All students, faculty and alumni are invited to the ceremony. Known to thousands of students as “Chink,” a nickname acquired in childhood, Mr. Whitten was one of the most popular men on campus. He died last April at the age of 51. The renaming of the Union in his memory was done by student request, and with the support of the administration and approval of UM trustees. Dr. Robert J. Hurley. Institute of Marine Science, will leave the University of Miami at the end of November for a year to be Deputy Director of the UNESCO Office of Oceanography in Paris. Dr. Hurley has been at UM for five years... Dr. Howard M. Lenhoff. director, Laboratory for Quantitative Biology, just completed a lecture tour, speaking at Duke University, University of Georgia and Emory University on “Quantitative Approach to the Natural History of Hydra.”... Miss Joan Savre. speech, is author of the booklet, “Helping The Child to Listen and Talk,” published by Interstate Printers and Publishers... Dr. Frederick Fennell, music, was guest conductor last week of the All-Connecticut Band, Orchestra and Chorus Festival. Another new record album of his is on the market. In it he conducts the London Pops Orchestra in music by Eric Coates: Three Elizabeths, London Suite and Four Ways. It’s on a Mercury label... Dr. Archie L. McNeal, director, University Libraries, has been reappointed by Gov. Haydon Burns to the Florida Library and Historical Commission. The appointment is for a four-year term... Dr. Granville Fisher. psy= chology, spoke recently to the Downtown Lions Club on “The Nature of the Creative Process.”... Dr. Billy J. Paschal, education, is author of “A Pound of Cure for Educational Problems,” in a recent issue of School and Society... Dr. J. R. Rubini. medicine, presented his paper, “On the Placental Barrier To Leukemia” at the 9th International Cancer Congress, Tokyo. He received a NRC travel grant for the trip...
