WEEKLY LETTER .......... assorted underwater diving equipment is on sale through June 5 at the Institute of Marine Science (the former Marine Lab) to UM personnel. At laughably low prices, they are offering mostly fins and masks, including such intriguing items as Whale Tail Fins, Giant Duck Feet, Flipper Slippers and the more prosaic standard web feet. Sale is only from 4 to 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and next Monday in the Agassiz Building at the Institute on Rickenbacker Causeway next to Seaquarium. Most departments on main campus have a list of equipment to be sold on cash-and-carry basis to ID card-carrying UMsrs. WHICH REMINDS US of a few other items emanating from the Institute: The motor vessel ................ Vicca, on loan to UM, this month completed its maiden voyage as a research vessel, skippered by Dr. Samuel P. Meyers, on a 12-day cruise to the Bahamas.... Recent visitors to the Institute included officials of the Institute of Marine Research in Kiel, Germany and the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute. Others are due from the Centre de Recherches et d'Etudes Océanographiques in Paris...A grant of $65,984 from the National Institutes of Health will finance the first year of the Institute's Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program supervised by Dr. Charles E. Lane. ATOMS IN ACTION An exhibit of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, will be on view at the ............ Miami Public Library June 1-18. Prepared by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, in which the UM holds membership, the exhibit includes panels and models explaining the invisible world of the atom, reactors and radioisotopes. PESTS & MACHINES Purchasing Agent Matthew Borek reports all contracts for pest control and service of office machines will be automatically renewed for the new fiscal year unless your department is notified in writing, but new requisitions must be submitted for letter orders expiring May 31. WEATHER WATCHERS Twenty weathermen, including two from Canada,* are taking the Weather ........... Bureau-sponsored radar meteorology course being conducted through June 16 by Homer W. Hiser, Radar Research Lab director. This is the 12th class held since the program started in 1959. RADIOACTIVITY After considerable study, the UM has purchased an insurance policy cover-.0*. ing use of radioactive materials at specific locations on the various campuses. Vice President Cohen said coverage extends to research activities in these locations: Philbrick Building, 1721-27 N.W. 10th Ave.; Medical Research Building, 1700 N.W. 10th Ave.; Hernando Building, 504 Santander Ave.; Collier Building, Virginia Key, and Building R-ll, South Campus. Use of radioactive materials in any other location must have prior written approval from Mr. Cohen. SPEAKING OF Dr. Andrew Sobczyk, mathematics, has been appointed principal investigator FACULTY for a two-year research project in functional analysis entitled "Projec- .......... tions and Extensions," supported by a grant of $17,567 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research...Dr. Herman Meyer, mathematics and engineering, received pipe and scroll from students and faculty during initiation banquet of Pi Mu Epsilon math honorary "in grateful recognition for his many years of inspirational teaching and scholarly service."...Business and Administration Deans Grover A.J. Noetzel, J. Everett Royer and Joseph H. Young were honored by their colleagues with a special banquet at the Riviera Country Club...Prof. Aaron Lipman, sociology, is field representative for a National Opinion Research Center survey intended to show relationship between college experience and career goals. More than 400 UM seniors received questionnaires...Drs. Robert J. Boucek and William P. Murphy, Jr., School of Medicine, are cited for outstanding achievement in RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS OF 1960, recently published by the National Institutes of Health. The doctors used a clot-dissolving enzyme, fibrinolysis, and through a special technique injected it directly into the coronary arteries of patients who had suffered severe coronary thromboses...Dr. Lester B. Wheeler, Director, Reading Clinic, attended the International Reading Association convention in St. Louis, May 4-6...Dr. Karl S. Vorres, chemistry, has received a $23,000 grant for a two-year study of "Mixed Refractory Oxides."
