ERITAS December 18, 1961 Office of Public Information Vol. 2- No. 13 UM PICTURE SYMBOLIZES EDUCATION GOALS An action photo of Associate Professor Blake King teaching a UM engineering class- is frontispiece for "Within Our Reach," final report of the Commission on Goals for Higher Education in the South, created by the Southern Regional Education Board. The report represents a year's searching study of the needs and challenges of higher education in the 16 states served by SREB, a state-supported agency. The commission was headed by Colgate W. Darden, Jr., former Virginia governor and former president of the University of Virginia, and includes Atlanta Constitution Publisher Ralph McGill, honorary UM alumnus. Printed in a handsome, 48 page brochure, "Within our Reach" has a first edition of 15,000 copies, which are being distributed to college presidents, trustees, state officials, legislators and others connected with or interested in higher education. Five major goals are listed, as follows: "1, to provide every individual with opportunities for maximum development of his abilities; 2, to produce citizens responsive to the social, economic and political needs of their time; 3, to achieve excellence in teaching, scholarship and research; 4, to accelerate the economic progress of the Southern region through education and research; 5, to guide the region in solving social problems created by population changes, racial differences, urbanization and technological growth." The UM frontispiece, taken by Flip Schulke, UM alumnus, for student literature being produced by Wilson Hicks, was one of several sent by the PIO in response to a request from SREB. In discussing "Within Our Reach" at last week's annual meeting of the SREB public relations committee in Atlanta, Dr. Winfred L. Godwin, SREB director, said to William S. Howland, committee member, "That picture symbolizes the spirt of learning and teaching."
